Not the best picture of 1988 by any means, but still better than you'd think.
They took what could have been easily been unbearable Hollywood schmaltz and made something that feels mostly naturalistic and quite entertaining.

I think it was a brilliant and insightful look into autism - they brought awareness to these people and made it riveting cinema at the same time.
