Does OJ Simpson kind of ruin your enjoyment of the movie now

I mean the movies are funny don't get me wrong, but OJ kind of ruins it for me now. I just feel strange watching it.

I'm not bothered by OJ in it. The movies were done way before he did his crimes, and I consider them to be a snapshot of the wholesome OJ we grew up with, not the scum he later became.

Similarly in the case of Phil Spector, I respect & enjoy the great music he produced in the 60s & 70s. His little murder wrap in 2003 doesn't change the past.

But in the case of Roman Polanski, he raped the girl & fled justice in 1978 before he did his biggest movies. So if you watch a post-78 Polanski film you're watching the work of a fugitive rapist. If you're ok with that, whatever, but I'm not. Never seen a Polanski flick & don't care to.

A more complicated example is Juliet Hulme (the subject of Heavenly Creatures) who murdered a woman, did 2 years in prison, was released and now writes murder mysteries. Even though she [arguably] did her time, I think her choice of subject material is in poor taste, so no, I would never read a Juliet Hulme mystery because that's too creepy.

Strangely enough, OJ fits in this movie very well, even knowing about the murder scandal that rocked him later in life.

Put it this way, in 1988 OJ was a retired NFL star who played in some movies. He was popular. I try remember who he was at that time to everyone. I mean, who was Mel Gibson to people prior to 2006? He was a popular and lovable actor. It doesn't change the Lethal Weapon movies at all. How about the rant Kramer did at the comedy club? Maybe a little overblown, but I still never think about it when I watch Seinfeld.

So OJ was who he was at the time. He had great chemistry with Leslie Nielsen. Oddly enough, since OJ gets cranked so badly in those movies it makes it a little funnier

oj is great in this!

He was already a scum bag when he made this movie. He beat his wife long before he tried decapitating her. We simply didn't know it.

Unless, of course, you find wife-beating to be "wholesome".

reply

Good point. Wholesome all-american heroes don't suddenly turn into scumbag murderers. He must've been practicing all along.

reply

Not really. Growing up when I did, I missed OJ's palying days. I knew that he had the all-time rushing record, but really didn't look up to the guy at all. I saw him on TV in Hertz commercials and on "1st & 10" and then the "Naked Gun" movies. Like everyone else, I think it's poetic justice that he gets the crap beaten out of him in all the movies.

It doesn't ruin it for me, but it is kind of wierd watching it. It's almost hard to believe there was a time when people loved OJ.

For me, this pretty much.

No, because of the amount of terrible things that happen to his character. I get even more pleasure watching it because of that.

Why is everyone calling it a "murder scandal"? I just call it a murder.

It does make me a tiny bit uncomfortable sometimes when I'm watching the movie; but it doesn't completely stop me from enjoying it either!

reply

Not really, he IS just an actor after all.

Question your prejudices.

reply

It is awkward at times but I the film is so funny I still enjoy it.

there may be a boogie man or boogie men in the house:Homer Simpson.

reply

His name isn't OJ. It's Nordberg!

reply

Are you kidding me? It doesn't effect my enjoyment at all, his performance was killer!

reply

No, it doesn't ruin it for me. This was well before OJ became a double murderer.

I doubt he gets any royalties and if he does it's peanuts.

reply

Wouldn't any royalties get grabbed up to pay off the lawsuit he lost? Otherwise, it's just fluffernutters and crumb cakes from the prison canteen anyway.

reply

Right, any royalties should go to the Goldman and Brown families!

No. Face it, O.J. is good on camera. A charming nice guy. Unfortunately, for certain people who've gotten to know him a little better he's not quite so nice.

reply

No. Whenever I watch a film, I am thinking of the character, not the person playing the character. The same goes for Capricorn One, which I have on DVD. I am watching the character OJ is playing, not OJ the person.
