What made you laugh out loud?

What was your favorite and funniest scene? Mine was when Ruprict (Martin) poked himself in the eye with the fork that had a cork on it.

Yes, this is a terrific comedy, and one my wife and I pop in the dvd when we need a good laugh or two.

The whole "Ruprecht, the Monkey Boy" sequence with the signature moment probably being Ruprecht's, "thank you" (after going to the, um, bathroom) just beats out the cork in the eye bit for my money.

But, I have to rank this scene (as so many others did) just behind the Dr. Schufhausen visiting Freddy in the hotel room. Every time Caine (as Schufhausen) asks Janet to get out of the way, and then he gets a running start with the reed in his hand, I lose it.

Both Caine and Martin were really at the top of their games in this movie.

reply

Yes, the scene where he went to the bathroom while at the table was probably my favorite (although there were a number of great scenes).

This whole movie is fantastic! I love Caine, and Martin, and together...AMAZING!I have to say, my favorite scene is...

Ruprecht: Excuse me. May I go to the bathroom first?

 one of the funniest scenes in the film

Yep.

"Hey! There's my clothes!"

*baffled look*

but the best is easily the Ruprecht part. Between the applesauce, cork, trident, peeing, pots, and all the rest, its just genius at work. though really, there isnt an un-funny moment in the movie.

the whole part when steve marin (forgot character name) was acting retarted, i was dying in laughter.

My fave part was Steve Martin "miraculously" getting cured, & getting up off the wheelchair & clumsily walking to the girl. They dubbed an angelic choir in the background, which made a funny scene hilarious!

the whipping scene gets me everytime.. No matter how many times I see it I cant stop laughing.. Its the look on steve martins face as he comes in a running start! and then the line at the end from janet.. look hes so happy hes crying hahaha one of my all time fav movies

reply

The whipping scene is one of my favourites; Headly's "Look, he's so happy he's crying!" has me sliding off the sofa every time.

The Ruprecht parts are amongst the funniest scenes ever filmed as well, IMO.

BUT - if one has to ask which was the *funniest*; it would be the moment when Janet (Headly) is getting on the plane. She turns, runs back to Jaimeson (Caine) and thrusts the satchel (supposedly holding the $50,000) into his arms and says she can't take it. "It doesn't belong to me...and I'll always have something from you which means so much more!"

That's absolutely *the* funniest moment - because here we have these two scoundrels (and despite Caine's charm and Martin's charisma their characters are truly loathsome) who have been taking advantage of a young woman - who in turn has been playing them like the virtuoso she is. That wonderful line is her one chance to gloat - and tell the oh-so-suave Jaimeson exactly what she's done. Every time I see that moment I have to laugh and applaud. :)

ruprecht is the highlight of this film, obviously there are plenty of toher hilarious moments but to me that's one of the funniest scenes in comedy history, it's just such a shame that this film is so underrated!

What's that? You just called me a bastard didn't you!

reply

I agree. It's such a clever and funny little film.
Another funny bit is when he's trying to remember the name of Caine's character in jail. You can totally see how Steve Martin influenced Jim Carrey in Liar Liar (in All of Me also).
Pretty much every single scene with Steve is hilarious in this film.
