What made you laugh out loud?
What was your favorite and funniest scene? Mine was when Ruprict (Martin) poked himself in the eye with the fork that had a cork on it.

shareThere are quite a few great scenes in this funny comedy but the standout for me is the scene where Caine is trying to get feeling out of Martin's legs with the stick. Martin is struggling to pretend he can't feel anything and Caine gives up after having to resort to running at him with the stick - Hilarious!
I consider this one of the great comedies and it is a shame that it is underrated.
"A mind is like a parachute. It only works when it's open"
This movie is vastly underrated. It's a classic in my family. Ruprecht steals the show. That swinging tire in his room, the pots, the breaking of things on the mantel, the hug, ...
"OH LAWRENCE THIS IS THE HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE!! I THINK MY TESTICLES ARE DROPPING!!"
"When I left you I was but the learner. Now I am the master."
This whole movie is simply fantastic, but the leg whipping scene is by far the funniest moment in the film. It had tears rolling down my face. I showed it to my family once, and all of them were rolling in the floor at this part. Even my mom, who doesn't usually laugh out loud at something, was cracking up. It is THAT funny! I also like it when Ian McDiarmid (the butler) finally tells Steve Martin "Oh shut up" and walks off. Classic stuff!
shareIt's gotta be the scene where Laurence whips Freddie's legs. I laughed so much I thought my mouth was going to start bleeding.
"...and there ain't no world but this one."
I also love the part where Lawrence whips Freddie's legs with a stick. True classic. I was laughing so hard, I had tears!!
"Look Doctor, he's so happy he's crying!"

there are so many classic scenes and quotes from this film; it's an all time classic!
i have to agree with everyone else who picked the scene where micahel caine is whipping steve martin's legs with the reed. steve martin's reaction is absolutely hysterical. i was laughing so hard, i couldn't breathe - i'm even laughing right now as i type this! (and getting strange looks from my co-workers.)
"or my name isn't doctor (whip!) emil (whip!) schufhaussen (whip!). the 3rd (whip!)" classic!!!!!!!!
that my favorite part too when Micheal Caine whip Steve Martin legs and tries to fake it,I also like
the part when Micheal Caine has used a Aussie accent.
This movie is classic
The only one that made me burst into laughter was that scene when Steve Martin was leaning against the huge white pole, trying to look sharp, and he slipped and fell.

Of course, the whipping scene, the whole scene in the cave where Rupert is growling at a woman from the beginning and Michael Cane says "do you want me to get the genital cuff?" and he darts back up off her...hilarious.
"I've got culture coming out of my ass!"
I agree with those who said that this is an underrated movie - a true classic. I can't agree about the leg whipping scene but the entire Ruprect sequence was an absolute hoot - I had tears streaming down my face and it physically hurt to laugh.
From when Lawrence was standing outside of Ruprect's room and the noise of him frantically trying to hide whatever he'd been up to Oh!, and the swinging tyre was one of the funniest of the many throw-away sight-gags - to the scene at the dinner table where the butler asks "may I take your trident sir?" hilarious.
Not...Mother?
Freddie in the disco watching LJ work on Janet on the dance floor, confined to his wheelchair. When that sailor says: "Get up and dance, he says! I'd like to smack him!" and Freddie replies: "She used to be my girl."
Also, when we learn the identity of the man Freddie lost his dance partner to on "Dance USA."

I think one of my favorite scenes is when they first arrive at the villa with Janet, playing the Freddy & Dr. Schufhaussen characters.
"Welcome to hell."
As Lawrence & Janet head up the stairs, Freddy comes squealing in the room in his wheelchair, looking sad cause he can't go upstairs.
Cut to the music room, where Lawrence reveals the music box and begins dancing with Janet. They spin around & we see Freddy laying on the floor, groaning.
<not the exact lines, but close>
"Oooooooooohhhhhhhhh"
"I heard the music, so I pulled myself up the stairs and dragged myself down the hall.....and here you are....DANCING!!!!!"
"Oh, Doctor, this seems so cruel for him to watch us dancing."
"Your right, Janet" Lawrence closes & locks the door, leaving Freddy laying in the hallway.
They continue dancing as Freddy moans loudly over the music, the handles of the door frantically jiggling back & forth as he tries to get back in.
That scene gets me everytime. Steve Martin is brilliant in this role.
"Janet, don't make me crawl around you. This sand is TOO HOT!"
