WOULD you let a 10 yr old see this?

My best friend at school bragged his parents let him watch this and I just wondered is that normal for a kid to watch this is it violent? gory?

reply

I watched this film when i was 10 years old. It was very scary and was remembered for whole life.

Then I`d say YES. 10 years old child can watch this movie.

reply

only if you want to scare the crap out of them.

reply

NO - I wouldn't - for gore and sexual scenes. Wait till he is 16/17. 10yo is far too young IMHO

i wouldn't just because i don't think a ten year old would understand the themes.

I would say it DOES depend on the child, but they'd have to be a VERY mature 10 year old to handle the themes of this film. The sexuality in the film isn't as much an issue-- though Frank having his way is a bit much for any child to understand-- but the violence is far too hard-edged for most.

That being said, I saw the film at about 10-12 years of age, and it scared the ever-loving hell outta me. Which was good, because that was the type of experience I enjoyed (and still enjoy-- though nothing really scares me anymore) from a film.

It also made me think about themes like the difference (or lack thereof) between pleasure and pain, which I only understood much later in life; but even as a child, I enjoyed the idea of this malevolent force in the shadows, creeping unseen even in an otherwise seemingly normal suburban family...

I don't think the issue with the sexuality in the film is the nudity-- nudity is just nudity; or even just the sex-- which is a natural thing, and really a lot less of an issue than the gore and violence, but 1) sorry of its old fashioned but I do think children should be censored from sexuality until they are old enough to understand it (although I do appreciate that when "old enough" occurs is very variable) and 2) some of the sexuality in the film is downright abusive in tone, and I do think a young mind would be disturbed by this (probably less-so than the gore and violence, but yeah I do think it's too much).

That being said... it depends on what you are asking. If you are asking if you think parents should LET their 10-year old see the film, I'd say hell no: part of the FUN of the film for a young audience is that "I'm not supposed to see this" aspect of it-- I know that's what made it so alluring for me at the time. That being said, if you are asking WILL a 10-year old probably end up seeing this?

...

Well I did at around that age. I didn't understand much of what I saw, but I knew it was heavy, I knew it was dark, and it sat with me for awhile before I could watch it without cringing (now, considering my movie tastes, its fairly tame, but yeah... at the time... definitely weighed heavily on me).

Yes, I would let kids watch it. When I was a young child I could not watch this alone. My parents have no problem with me watching it, but I could not watch it alone. It took years before I was able to watch it alone.

Thinking about it, he might have only watched parts of the movie, perhaps that explains why he wasn't shaken after watching the movie.
He absoloutley was obsessed with horror movies and his life is probably messed up now.

I also agree most stuff in an adult film would go over your head and you would just understand the violence at that age

I've seen gory movies similar to this at that age (9-10) and wasn't traumatized by it if that's what people expect. If anything it has made horror one of my favorite movie genres.

Short answer...yes. It's just a movie.
