WOULD you let a 10 yr old see this?

My best friend at school bragged his parents let him watch this and I just wondered is that normal for a kid to watch this is it violent? gory?

reply

i think its fine if he watched it only if he understands the things that are going on in the movie. also in the 80s there were toys and there was going to be a game so if kids knew and saw it then then i think this guy is fine

Yes but kids in the 80s were worlds different then kids are now. For one, kids then were able to "handle their ***" a lot better then ones now..just saying.

reply

Never, ever, would I let a child see this. I'm 19 and my best friend that I watched it with is 16. At her age, I personally could not have handled it, but she was fine, and so was I.

But, no, that's not "normal."

reply

Hell no. I'm not very uptight about these things, but dark sexuality and gore are at the center of the story. I can think of a lot of '80s horror films I would consider letting my child see, but this is most certainly not one of them.

Sad story. You got a smoke?

Well as a kid i watched all sorts of horror (including hellraiser) and i dont think it done any harm to me infact i think it propbably done a great good for me as im an artist and when i was 7-8 years old i listened to heavy metal and drawed after ironmaiden covers, so i dont think its a bad thing. In old times people told stories of the boogeyman and all sorts of grim tales to scare the crap out of the children so they would behave well and not stray away from a "good" path. I dont have children myself but i have 5 nephew/nieces and i allways told them stuff that maybe theyre parrents necesarry didnt do and they're just fine infact theyre super smart all of them and excells themself in what they are interested in. But the only one of them that really are interested in the horror genre is my soon to be 11 year old nephew who has a large Collection of horror movies himself and its just fine with his mother. I have watched house of 1000 corpses and devil rejects with him and we have watched natural born killers and for that sake southpark (which parrents often doesnt wants theire kids too Watch) too. We often talk about horror movies too but hellraiser ive said he should wait a couple of years to Watch and he actually had the oportunity to lend it one day from someone but he said he would wait to watch that movie. The only problem i see about kids watching a movie like this is that one of the main themes in this movie/novel is sado masochism and to be honest that isnt for kids i wouldnt either want kids to watch passolinis "Salo - or the 120 Days of Sodom" wich ive seen as an adult and almost made me puke. The fact is that kids Arent that fragile as some people want to make them i usually try to treat kids as everyone else and they are not stupid but as i said before this movies themes are a bit too weird and uncomprehensible for kids. A personal experience i had when i was around 10 and didnt understand and hated but a couple of years later loved was a clockwork orange wich also has some themes kids wont understand. Today i dont Watch as many horror movies as i did earlier im far more interested in weird quirky movies with a small audience in mind and in many horror movies cases today it seems to me that they could just aswell been funded by right wing christians and that is deffently something i wouldnt let kids be influenced by.

dream_demon4 i can only agree on what you say that it depends on the child and when you say you got traumatized (hehe) by gremlins then i understands you. As i said i was also watching lots of horror back then but i sort of do remember a drawing of of brain in a cartoon that freaked the hell out of me but i didnt mind watching people getting killed by cenobytes or by a alien at the nostromo so its quite funny how things turns out in an imaginative mind of a child or for that sake an adult.

Again i'll agree most Kiddies will only recognise that something omnious is around the corner and they wont understand the symbolism of Barkers ideas and the full meanings of the story. ., Hellraiser or for that sake the novel, the Hellbound Heart has some pretty dark parts that deals alot about sadomasochism ..but as we have discussed its in the eye of the beholder and every little detail can infact be the thing that messes with our mind. Personally i have never had any problem with Gremlins, the 2nd movie was one of the 1rst movies i ever saw in the Cinema at the age of maybe 10. Neither ET (haha) or for that sake Starship Troopers has any nasty things for me. Offcourse thats a personal thing, besides that in my opinion Spielberg hasnt made many movies apealing to me besides schindlers list and indiana jones(hehe). im born in 1979 and most movies i Watch wont mess with my head, the movies i have watched as an adult that has messed with my head is amongst others - Martyrs, Salo, A serbian movie, caligula, Cannnibal Hollocaust but besides those few has truely messed with my mind. But even as a child hellraiser didnt really mess with my head and i understood the sexuual darkness of the story but lots of adults would be creeeped by it still. but still as every person has a thing that could mess with its imagination it could just aswell be a withering flower as dumb as it sounds.

Can never work out if these are troll post and the people claiming to be watching x rated horror and sex before 10 is just bragging.

Only those with no valid argument pick holes in people's spelling and grammar.

I started watching these type of movies around that age.

As far as I know it didn't *beep* me up.

At worst you will have a couple of days of nightmares and mild-paranoia like when walking home in the dark or something like that. But a scary movie will not *beep* up a 10 year old, especially if it has been fully explained that everything happening in the movie is fictional and fake.

Personally I don't think any movie should have a higher age limit than 12 years old. I think teenagers are overprotected in these times. It's more about guiding them the right path than trying to control them like little children.

dream_demon4 im from denmark in europe and from what i can see Australia has both very strict and conservative rules on movies and computer games and the lists is long. We really doesnt have such a thing as "banned" thing atleast only in one case i have read about is a computer game that had some hidden advertisment in it and thats all if i remember correctly, offcourse real stuff is a different matter. I think its ridiculous that in these times and ages some people decides what the rest of the people should Watch on decisions on blasphemy, sex and violence, critique, but offcourse the indicator marking is ok so people has an idea. Besides the rules of Australia in this matter or so they seem to me there has come some pretty disturbing movies out of Australia that i would recommend to my friends like Ghosts of the civil dead, Romper stomper, Chopper and probably lots of others and feel free to come with a couple of recommendation if you have any in this sort of department. Last of all i agree with you on your former post that in the 80'ies there was some amazing cover art on the movies and i used to as kid to either for free or as a cheap buy get the posters when they had been up for a while, i only whish i had kept them.

thanks for your great reply i'll deffently try to get some of the movies but im not so sure about the last two, animal horror is usually not my thing but maybe even them. I've checked them out and they can easily be bought eventhough the complete series Underbelly is a bit prizy for around 100 euros it will propably be my first choice so thanks for the advise.

i checked it out in its description and on amazon and it seems like i will like it and in a degree Works as the wire's focus on different gangs each season. but well when i buy series i allways wants the complete series so eventhough the show can Work as seasons without interferring with eachother it would bother me if i only have one of them and i'll rather take that chance. but thanks for the advice anyways have you seen the movies i mentioned ofcourse you have seen chopper as you came with a comparrison but how about ghosts of the civil dead ?

You gotta Watch Ghosts... of the Civil Dead its John Hillcoats ( The Proposition, The Road, Lawless) first movie and it starres my favourite australian nick cave eventhough not a leadrole, you can find some trailers on youtube. Its an absolute no miss in my eyes and cave plays a really memorable and desturbing role in that movie so does others aswell and its propably the darkest and most gritty prison movie i can recollect. you really cant go wrong with hillcoats movies eventhough To Have & to Hold isnt the greatest movie in my book. Animal Kingdom ive seen and its good, Once Were Warriors are truly great, two hands i got as the last mentioned i just believe ive havent seen it yet. Balibo ive heard of but im not sure whether ive seen it or not the rest im not sure about. If you havent seen romper stomper yet go tjeck it out its with russel Crowe as a psycho nazi and id say that role gave him the opportunty to later play macho roles like in gladiator. cool speaking with you dream_demon4

Well i thought you propably had seen romper stomper i just had to ask, i will tjeck out the documentary at some point. Another aussie movie i have in high esteem is shine, well thanks Again for the great advise you have been giving me.
