Why does Sgt Hartman act like a hypocrite with his racist comments?

I always felt like Sgt. Hartman was setting a poor example for his men when he told them that there was no racial bigotry and later on he was acting like a Hypocritical A-Hole to Pvt. Snowball and ruined any hope of respect that the man could have hoped to have learned from him or the respect of the others:

I am hard but I am fair. There is no racial bigotry here. I do not look down on *beep* k*kes, wops or greasers. Here you are all equally worthless. And my orders are to weed out all non-hackers who do not pack the gear to serve in my beloved Corps. Do you maggots understand that?

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: What's your name, scumbag?
Private Snowball: Sir, Private Brown, sir!
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Bullsh*t! From now on you're Private Snowball. Do you like that name?
Private Snowball: Sir, yes, sir!
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Well there's one thing that you won't like, Private Snowball: they don't serve fried chicken and watermelon on a daily basis in my mess hall.
Private Snowball: Sir, yes, sir!

That kind of made Hartman look stupid by going against his own words when he first introduced himself to the recruits, odd that nobody ever pointed this out to him and got him to see the lack of logic that he displayed here.

How was that even racist? Stereotypical, maybe. But not "racist". You must be from the US, those people have a strong PC culture to the point where they're way more sensitive than a 13 year old girl in her first period.

I'm sensing you've never been through boot camp, right?

The black dude sure had tougher skin than you, and even seemed to enjoy the situation (as in welcoming the challenge), for Hartman clearly sees him reacting as he would like, with enthusiasm!

You want degrading and inhuman boot camp? Try Mexico (the special forces, where Los Zetas graduated from)...

To the OP,actually, if you had an understanding of history and were aware of the timeline then you would understand that the civil rights movement was very big in the US of A at that time. What Gunnery Sgt. Hartman was making clear to everyone in attendance at the introduction to the Corps was that the Corps was above the rules and there was NO ONE on that planet that was going to save their asses from abuse, NAACP, CLU or otherwise. It's not that Hartman was a bigot and I am sure that he probably enjoyed group hugs with his men when the camera was off but he is making it crystal clear that your a$$ belongs to the Corps now.

Life is always intense for a repo man.

The Marines were pretty much the last part of the US armed forces to desegregate, and until well into WW2 it was seen as "the white man's service".

"Chicken soup - with a *beep* straw."

He wasn't stupid. He was doing it intentionally to try and antagonize the men to see if they could handle it.

I notice your English gets better when you want something.

Hartman's role in the film is to be the hammer that breaks the cement of the soldier's morale. A big part of the movie's plot and identity is the idea of brainwashing soldiers into obedience, taking away their free will and having them obey commands no matter what. To do that, Hartman mentally breaks his troops as soon as the film starts.

This is also part of why he bullies and abuses Pyle so much, it's not that he doesn't like Pyle any more than anyone else, it's that Pyle isn't meeting the standards, so he needs to be pushed harder. So Hartman piles (pun unintended) on the yelling and screaming and shouting to push Pyle harder and further.

He's not racist, homophobic, sexist, bigoted or anything like that. It's his job to SEEM it though. A fun little fact is that the actor playing Hartman, R. Lee Ermey, was a real life drill instructor, and almost everything he said was improvised on the spot for the scene. He just made up most of it as he went to further dehumanise the 'soldiers' he was working with.

So in short he's not a hypocrite, he's an actor playing a character who's playing a bigot to motivate his soldiers.
