I didn't see it theatrically, I was too young to have choice in the matter lol, maybe about 8yrs old or whatever.
I didn't even know it existed until season 3 began on tv & I wondered wtf was going on. Even then, having grown up 3yrs from my initial exposure to the show's first season, that's a long time when you're young- so I just kinda quit the show/franchise & moved on.
Once it started to have some tv airings, I began to put the pieces together & I actually laughed at the idea of killing them all off- they were essentially still just toys to me. I also thought it was a pretty stupid idea lol.
The only way this works is they set the movie in the year 2005, so in my youthful mind, the characters must've been repeating the same episodes for the next 20yrs- I think I clued in to that idea & so using the movie not merely as a tool to kill off a toy line, rather to show just how far our beloved Gen 1 characters traveled into the future.
