Is this Mann's best film?
It's certainly my favourite Mann film, but is it his best? What do fans think?

I'm a huge Michael Mann fan. HEAT is Mann's best, period. I don't understand how anyone would not like it. It's maybe the BEST crime picture ever made. Seriously.
THE INSIDER is fantastic too. Great artistry. Michael Mann at his best.
COLLATERAL is a little silly, but it's classic Michael Mann and the film is entertaining as hell. Cruise rocks in it.
THIEF is a perfect crime film. It's slick and James Caan is amazing in it.
The rest of his movies are all good (except The Keep, which sucks!), but flawed.
I agree The Insider is Mann at his best, and Collateral was entertaining, but The Keep didn't suck... mind you I don't think it was great, and much of it might seem dated now but there's something about the opening scenes when the germans are rolling into the village. The mountains, snow, the slightly washed out colours... it's very much Mann. I think they should restore it and possibly tighten it up a bit in editing. If anything to see it in better resolution, with a great cast! Scott Glenn, Gabriel Byrne, Ian McKellen, and Jurgen Prochnow.
Heat is highly overrated. It's good, but it's not that good. Most of the acclaim originates from the fact that DeNiro and Pacino are in it together.
Mohicans will always be my favourite.
