By Woody Allen
8/10

reply

1) Hannah & her sisters (I cried at the end)
2) Stardust Memories ( saw this in a packed theatre in Paramus NJ the day after it opened. I loved it and was the only one out of 200 that laughed. Also presaged the murder of John Lennon )
3) Sweet & Lowdown (wonderful casting and great music)
4) Manhattan (great sentimental value)
5) Broadway Danny Rose ( I'm just a beard!)

I'm not your average Woody fan. I just cannot get into 'Crimes' but I adore 'What's Up Tiger Lily'. I loved Interiors, indifferent to Deconstructing Harry.

I can't make up my mind.

I'm tired of Annie Hall because I have seen it dozens of times. On the other hand, I have seen Hannah and her Sisters just as often and to me it only gets better on repeated viewings. "Hannah" is his warmest movie in my opinion, and his least cynical. There also aren't very many movies centered around Thanksgiving, so that's one I always cue up this time of year to get in the holiday spirit.

My best friend and I used to see every new Woody movie together the weekend it came out, but now we live in different towns. We both love Radio Days -- I need to own that one. And we both give high marks to Crimes and Misdemeanors, Husbands and Wives and Sweet and Lowdown. And let's not forget A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy -- that's one that people always forget but that really has its rewards.

Of all the directors working today, I believe Woody and Clint Eastwood get the best performances out of their actors than anyone else. I agree with Woody himself when he says he's never directed a truly great movie -- the best of them are full of wonderful vignettes but none is a perfect whole, IMO. Still, there's no mistaking one of his movies for anybody else's. He has a style and a vision all his own. A deeply, deeply flawed man who has created some unforgettable characters and situations and some of the funniest moments in movie history.

Off to look for Radio Days. . .
