The Golden Child vs. Big Trouble In Little China
Both fantasy comedies with Asian influence came out the same year. Which one do you prefer? And which movie ripped off the other? Which one was first?

shareI think Carpenter was attached to the project when "The Golden Child" was supposed to be a serious fantasy adventure movie starring Mel Gibson, fresh from "Mad Max - Beyond Thuderdome" success, but when Mel decided to take a year off movies, was replaced by Eddie Murphy and the movie was re-written as a partial comedy. John Carpenter wanted to made "Big Trouble in Little China" a western where Kurt Russell playing a cowboy gets in adventures in the chinatown underworld of the old west trying to recover his stolen horse (in the final product it was his truck that had been stolen), but he got some ideas when he was attached to do "The Golden Child" and w/the help of the writers and the script that in a earlier draft was supposed to be the sequel of "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai across the 8th Dimension" the final product became the BTILC that we all know. That's why there are a few similarities beetween "The Golden Child" and "Big Trouble in Little China" (same year of release, same actors,a similar subject, etc). I would prefer "Big Trouble..." because is one of my favourite movies ever, but "The Golden Child" is also a good movie (but in some scenes Eddie Murphy seems miscast, isn't his movie genre, and his on-liners are adequate for a "Beverly Hills Cop" or "Coming to America" movies, not this one).
shareThe Golden Child just came on HBO and I watched it for the first time. Sorry to say, but I really did not like this movie. I just found it to be completely dull and unfunny from beginning to end. I really don't see why everyone likes it so much.
So, of course, Big Trouble wins by a mile. Anyone else agree?

I think big trouble, from what I remember is better as its darker, but they both have asian boobies in so, what the hey

they are both equally funny but Big trouble in little China is better made and the better movie, the action and some of the special effects in The golden child were pretty awfull.
shareI'd seen this before on TV when I was younger but watched it properly today and saw BTILC yesterday, I'd give it to BTILC, it was great, like others said, funny, fast paced adventure like and funny.. The Golden Child is funny but the story/the way the film goes is a bit dull atleast in comaprison to BTILC.
So for me, BTILC.
I've loved BTILC ever since randomly catching it on TBS late one night. Since then I've bought the VHS, the Special Edition DVD and seen it in a theater.
Only recently discovered and watched TGC on Netflix and really enjoyed it, probably in part because it's like a side-quel to Big Trouble. The Asian mysticism, zany characters, scenarios (dream sequence with live audience, gold), the buffoonish lead with the all knowing, ass kicking sidekick, etc.
This would be quite the triple bill with Adventures Buckaroo Banzai and Big Trouble In Little China.
I liked both of them. Wouldn't want to compare either to say which is better.
shareActually I take it back.
I watched "big trouble" again and I gotta say.. that is way more funny and entertaining.
The whole movie was over the top with asian/chinese mysticism, fighting, action and special effects. There were way more wild crazy and interesting fictitious chars and enemies in that movie.
Big Trouble is a much better movie. I do enjoy watching The Golden Child too though as it's funny.
