Great action and comic one-liners for US fans, but a film without a heart or soul.

Not really acting, but typical American ''guns and car chase'' fodder. Throw in a few ''Yeaaaah, way to go'''s and you have this.

And no, I ain't a SIMP or a teen.

You can see it that way, but I think all characters have distinct personalities, goals, jokes, mannerisms, etc.

This film even continues the journey of Ripley from being a helpless victim towards defeating her greatest boogeyman (boogeywoman?) one on one in the queen alien fight. That, and her relationship with Newt is well characterized and relatable. Also, even the android, Bishop has a character arc, Burke is a great villain, and he is just acting out of corporate greed, he is not a moustache twirling unrealistic caricature, he is also a well characterized person.

So it has action and one liners, yes. But apart from the above, just look at the death scene of Vasquez and Gorman. Two relatively minor characters have a common understanding after bickering at each other previously... That's good filmmakng and storytelling. There is your heart and soul.

"Wake up pendejo and then I'm gonna kill you"
"You always were an asshole Gorman"

*embrace* *hold hands on grenade*

Yes.

yes yes great point, sati 84! very good posts. vaskez and gormans fight bitter but unites in death! fine message to show courage of colonial marine!! add much depth to film. much heart.

i think hudson and vaskez could die like this too and would be great scene as they fight in film too but i like hudson death scene best.

can i adds, character of hudson very important to film. he is so scare that he become relateable to audience like me who feel his fear and terrors. he give film substances because he put you in his situation and you feel danger like him, you feel like alien after you. and he funny! paxton is best performance in film, he steal show. hudson character give film heart and souls, too.

Shut up, Communist shit stain.

No soul ? This film definitely has a soul and it is thanks to James Cameron’s wonderful writing, his writing is the core and soul of the entire film.

The relationship between Ripley and Newt is what elevates this film from merely "great action and comic one-liners". It's also one of the reasons Alien³ was such a slap in the face: two beloved characters, Newt and Hicks, killed off before the movie even started.

reply

Aliens 3 was the pits!!!

reply

the actors didnt wanna do it - so watcha gonna do?

reply

The kid who played Newt probably had grown too old for the role anyhow by the time cameras finally rolled...

reply

Sure they did, the studio just didn’t want to pay Biehn and Henn was too old, and Sigourney stupidly wanted to kill off Ripley - a decision she clearly regretted when she decided to make Ressurection 🤦🏻‍♂️

She was also responsible for Alien3 having no guns. That pretty much meant the writers couldn’t write some Hicks-led Aliens-style sequel.

Way to fuck over your own career Siggers - kill your best character, destroy your best franchise, and deprive audiences of a genuine strong female lead that everyone loved (unlike the invulnerable, obnoxious sass-queens trying to be men that Hollyweird keeps forcing on us today).

reply

Well it would make Ripley look like a bit of a failure if she failed with her "to wipe them out" mission after several declining quality cash in sequels .

She wanted the story to have a proper ending.

reply

Aliens was a proper ending.

reply

true ,would've been good place to leave it

reply

No heart or soul?

Definitely disagreeing here.

Hmmm…Can’t agree with this opinion. I’d wholeheartedly agree if you were talking about AvP, but Aliens resonates with fans (for decades) because there is some heart and soul in there.

The secondary characters in the story are supremely memorable, but the Ripley/Newt relationship is practically the heart of the story. Sigourney Weaver killed it in the role, and elevated a very competent action script.

“Army of the Dead” feels much more like what you’re talking about…and that movie copied like crazy from Aliens.
