i have a very similar experience--as a kid, watching this movie was like having a nightmare, i couldn't get the thing out of my head. i still have yet to rent it again, but may soon. canada is something else.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Part of me wants to get a copy just to see how I preceive it after all of these years.

on the weird canadian movies note, does anyone have any idea what this movie's name is, it was about a bunch of kids who build these elaborate snow forts and have snowball fights with each other. the snowballs had paint in the middle, so it you get hit, your clothes are ruined, a big dog gets paint all over himself and shakes it onto a couch, and there are these twin boys who switch to the other snowball team. Also some guy tries to syphon gas out of an old car. One of the snowforts has an escape hatch, where a sled could come out of. I realize that this is way off topic, but if anyone has seen this equally obscure Canadian movie, its probably someone who has also seen Peanut Butter Solution.

"Who do you think's in the burger?"

reply

I don't know how you remembered that, but thanks, I've been trying to remember what that was for like ten years

reply

the movie is called "The dog who stopped the war"

reply

It's called "La Guerre des Tuques" in French; in English, it's "The Dog Who Stopped the War". I too, watched these movies as a kid, along with "Les Six Doigts de la Main" about these kids in a club who initiate a new member- I just remember this kid going down a hill in a tire. Man we had good movies growing up!!! Haha.

I also had a frightful experience with this movie when I was approx. 5 years old. The most disturbing scene (as I can vaguely recall) was when the main players stepped into a painting of a broken down old mansion. It was dark and dreary and I seem to remember the kids climbing around in the dangerously decrepit old house. I think I'm going to purchase the VHS on Amazon if for no other reason than to show it to my kids someday when I have them and see if it evokes the same reaction.

I saw this when I was 6 and it seems kind of light-hearted to me now but it really scared me at the time! His hair just kept on growing! And there were some scary characters too.

reply

It terrified the bejeezus out of me when I was younger. That old man and the scary house! And the paintbrushes they were making or something.. I can't remember that well. Kidnapping kids is messed up in a family movie.
The scene were the boys wig came off during soccer (or football) freaked me out too. I must have felt his humiliation because that scene really really freaked me for years. It might have been the weird music that was accompanying it.

my god Im not the only one?

the memories of this movie from my childhood still give me strange dreams and that was 18 years ago, this movie haunted me for years afterwards, definitely not a childrens film.... tonight I decided to find out the title of this film so I could watch it and see if it still creeps me out, after a bit of searching I found it, and I have found an entire group of people who this flick affected as well!

I saw this movie when I was about six years old and I still get freaked out whenever I think about it. I was thinking of renting it again to see if it really is as scary as I remember it to be. I'm also going to show my twenty-three-year-old friend to see if she is freaked too.

I saw this movie as a kid also and remembered being slightly disturbed by it. My video store had it like five years ago, I'm deffinatly renting it if it's in. Just have to see what I think of it as an adult.

Also, thanks for The Dog Who Stopped The War!! I saw that movie a bunch of times when I was a kid but never knew the name of it, just remembered a little boy and girl who were on opposite sides but who liked each other. Also had an amazing song in it!!

what is so scary about this movie?? haha.. i havent seen it in a while and i dont remember it as being scary.. ill have to watch it again to see what you mean.

reply

This movie creeped me out as well! I haven't seen it since I was about 6 or 7...but I remember how scary the haunted house was, and the kid's hair right after he ran out of it!
What makes it so creepy is that the story is just plain bizarre, and seems more like a premise for an adult movie.

But I guess that's how kid movies were like in the 80s. Very bizarre plots with teenagers who think they run things on the planet(ex: Teen Witch, The Boy Who COuld Fly, Teen Wolf, Ratboy...ARGH! No, noT RATBOY!!!!)

Samson:Fool! Your fare is the only thing stopping me from breaking your face!

reply

ooohh.. well.. i guess i will just have to watch it again. haha.

reply

Woah. I watched it when I was 6 or something and I was also really freaked out. I don't know why exactly, I just remember I was thinking about it for weeks after.

reply

So weird!!. I saw it when i was 7 and it totally freaks me out to this day! Funny the synopsis says it's a comedy, but omg..it was the scariest movie I had ever seen and now as an adult, i don't think i could watch it. It was just so bizarre.

reply

I just watched this movie a bit ago...Fabulous! Did you notice they never resolved the hair thing?

And what charming underclothes you both have!

reply

Well...it's good to see that everyone else my age had nightmares about this movie too. It has severly scarred me for life. I STILL have nightmares about the stuff he puts on his head to make his hair grow. If I have the opportunity to see this movie again in the future I think I'll curl up into the fetal position and proceed to wetting my pants and sucking my thumb.

reply

K yeah about this movie.. i watched it all the time when i was little and it scared the crap out of me.. but i dont remember like any of it! I only remember when he walks into that painting to that scary house,i was sooo creeped out, and the guy who puts the solution down his pants hahah and "the rabbits yoru brother?" and at the end when his mom comes home and they hug. What is this movie about? and why was it soo scary??

reply

Yeah i watched this movie when i was little and i think i must have repressed it because i didnt remember it until my brother said "remember that wierd movie we watched when we were little" and as soon as he said the name i got this awful feeling in my stomach as i started remembering it... I can just remember the old house and him losing his hair and it growing back really fast and being used for paintbrushes?? But i remember now how terrified the movie made me when i was like 5 or 6 ...

I kinda wanna watch it now but i feel wierd about it...

reply

OMG they made paintbrushes out of his hair!! i so don't remeber this movie at all. That is sick!!!!

reply

I agree with you. I don't remember much of the movie like everyone is saying the painting they steeped through and the haunted house or whatever, i don't remember any of that I only remember the soccer game a bit but somehow it is still the scariest movie i have ever seen, I will take the exorcist or anyther scary movie over this anyday!... even though I am a little curious about it i don't want to start up nightmares again LOL... I remember watching it with my sister and it was like her favourite movie.

reply

This is seriously the scariest movie i have ever seen i couldn't even watch a movie with a bald person in it for year (the addams family when ..uncle fester)
I saw the movie in a video store a while ago and i was like maybe i will rent it, it can't be that scary now... I picked up the movie box and looked at the back of it and it has the kid with no hair. I immediatly put the box down and was like maybe i'll give it another 15 years i'm 20 now and i probably saw it when i was 5. Kids movie?? I don't think so, this movie has traumatized me for life.!!! LOL

reply

I completely agree. I watched this for the first time when I was 5 or 6 and it scarred me for life. I just bought a copy off ebay and I'm watching it again. I'm still a bit wary

reply

I was around 7 or 8 when I saw this movie and it reallyyyy freaked me out!! A lot!! I have always vaguely remembered a movie about this kid whose hair fell out and about a wig that came off during a soccer game and about painbrushes... but I could never remember the title! Wow, it's all coming back now. Maybe I was just a baby, I was older than most people were when they were scared of it. I just remember it being reallyy creepy!

reply

I to this day will NOT watch this movie again. It gave me countless nightmares as a young lad.

reply

This is so freaking funny ... I have bits and pieces of memories about the actual movie, but for years I couldn't get the scariness out of my head. I'm glad other people had the same reaction!! We should start a group, all watch it again together as adults, and figure out what the *beep* made it so scary!

reply

its weird that this post is on the front page. This movie definetly freaked me out when I was about 5 or 6. The only scene I remember now is one where the kid is being chased by a pack of dogs tearing his hair up. Man, that is weird to think other people actualy saw this and had the same experience I did. Another movie that freaked me out was Jacob two-two and the hooded fang. It was just bizare. I dont know why my mom made me watch these movies. Good stuff.
