More old children's Sci-Fi (I can't remember)

This is a movie I used to love and had completely forgotten about until I stumbled upon it today. Anybody else know of any obscure movies like this I can't seem to remember. Some I've recently rented for my son: Flight of the navigator, Innerspace, the last starfighter.

reply

Here's a couple off the top of my head...

Ice Pirates
Space Raiders
The Dark Crystal
Enemy Mine

Hope this helps...

Try

D.A.R.Y.L
Go Kids (UK title-stars Henry Thomas)not maybe a sci-fi but a good kids film

I used to love the 'burbs too but I guess thats not that obscure.

reply

OMG Billy thanks for mentioning Go Kids because I've been trying to remember the name of that movie for ages.

No matter who I asked, friends, or people at work etc no one had seen it or could remember watching it as a kid.

I would try and describe the lake with the crane at the bottom and also remembered it must have been in Australia because it had one of those outback style windmills.

Anyways another one to add to the list of classic 80s feel good children’s movies is...

Little Monsters

:)

reply

The Go Kids, Frog Dreaming, The Quest. It had a lot of titles and I remember trying to explain it to friends too and no one ever knew what I was talking about. The scene with the crane in the bottom of the lake was very memorable.

Another one I'm trying to remember is some movie where a kid was kidnapped by some hillbilly guys, but then escapes. At one point, he meets a hermit that gives him some rope ("can never have too much rope") that he uses to cross a ravine with. (That and he's always playing with one of those puzzles where two horse shoes are attached by a chain with a ring in the middle, where you have to get the ring off.)

reply

I think you are looking for Kid Colter.

reply

Wow, that's the one. Thanks. I remember we'd watch that in class at school all the time when I was a kid.

reply

Wow I was going to mention that. Rented that a bunch of times when it came out at the local corner store. Loved it and remember it so much. Would love to see it again somehow.

reply

I know what you mean. I've been trying to remember the name of it for ages. Most of my mates remembered the story but couldnt remember the name of it.
Awesome kids movie!!

reply

The Legend of Billie Jean with Helen and Christian Slater. Great flick.

Night of the Comet.
Heathers.
Ghostbusters.
Lost Boys.

reply

Batteries Not Included
The Last Starfighter
Star Man
Fire in the Sky
Short Circuit

Those were a few of my favourite sci-fi as a kid :)

reply

These might be fun, too:

Monster Squad

Slapstick of Another Kind (very obscure)
Iron Eagle
Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend
Ewok Adventure
Harry and the Hendersons
*batteries not included

Short Circuit
NeverEnding Story

Ahh, '80s flicks! You gotta love 'em!

reply

How could I forget batteries not included when I'd only just watched it on the same day! I thought of a couple others

Spacecamp
Willow
Krull
Legend
Time bandits
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
He-Man (?)
Labyrinth
Beetlejuice
Big
Howard the Duck
Starman
Spaceballs
Teen Wolf

Yeah, 80's films were the best

reply

Thanks for the help guys, this will keep me busy for a while.

reply

Hey dose anybody here remember the Goonies? It was an 80s flick that stared Cory Fieldman I think. Plot Summery: Group of kids go on adventure and find a ghost priate ship that's loaded with booty!

reply

Yup!!

Sean Austin
Cory Feldman
Josh Brolin(remember his char?) :)

Definitely one of my favourite kids sci-fi !!

reply

reply

the dude-30,

This is in response to your post on the Explorers soundtrack. Can you e-mail me at bgensprint[at]aol.com. Do you know where you found it?

reply

Some of you seem quite fond of this film, so I thought I'd ask an insane question. What film was playing at the drive-in when the boys flew through it in ThunderRoad? For some reason, I always had it in my head that the film that was on the screen had something to do with the Atari game Yars Revenge. Is there a movie based on Yars Revenge, or did I just imagine all this? If anyone knows, I'd appreciate some help

reply

The film was "Starkiller" but it is not an actual movie. It's name is probably originated from George Lucas' early drafts of Star Wars having Luke Starkiller instead of Skywalker. However, it is no suprise that you were thinking of Yars Revenge because that is the music used for the drive-in movie.

reply

I have more:

Big trouble in Little China
The Goonies
Karate Kid
Starman
Outsiders
Conan

reply

I agree ... there were some awesome movies in the 80's!

Does anyone remember that movie called.. "Zapped?" (I believe Scott Baio was in it!)
How about "The Boy Who Could Fly" or the "Benji" movies?

reply

"Gremlins" came to mind today! I remember when I was little, my younger brother and I watched it 13 times! We just loved that movie! Oh, wait.. that's not Sci-Fi is it? What about "Not Quite Human" and "Mac and Me?" Does anyone remember a movie about a robotic dog?

http://fathersloveletter.com/fllpreviewlarge.html

reply

I do believe the robotic dog one was "CHOMPS: Computerised HOMe Protection System".

reply

Was CHOMPS the movie where at the end they are at an airstrip and take the dog's head off to find a bomb with a digital display of a countdown timer? Or was that in the TV Series, "Benji, Zax and the Alien Prince"?

Please help.

And also, was "The Wizard" TV show the one where the toy inventor made a red laser that you could spell stuff out with in thin air? And a boy could only think of one thing to write: "help"

Oh and don't forget about:
Midnight Madness
Super Fuzz
The Wraith
Scavenger Hunt

Does anyone remember Tommy Trickster and the Stamp Traveller besides me. Great flick. Also, does anyone remember the name of a movie back in the 80's where these three kids who are obsessed with the cold war meet a russian spy who washed up on shore. The kids were fans of some dude who wore a jet pack or something. Anyone?

reply

Yep: it's RUSSKIES. I remember it fondly. I posted that as a recommendation previously.
Referencing that list: QUEST and GO-KIDS are apparently the same film!
I also forgot to recommend JOHNNY DANGEROUSLY

reply

Loved Harry and the Hendersons (remembered when it was released in 1987, it was the BIG summer moviethat year, along with Superman IV - The Quest for Peace).

Short Circuit is classic.

D.A.R.Y.L. oh yes, how depressed it made me.

and Batteries Not Included another fantastic sci-fi film from Spielberg.

No-one should be without Flight of the Navigator, another bittersweet one the psychological ravages of time-travel what with your lil bro grown up... buut with a happy ending.

TRON was good.

reply

[deleted]

phantasm, probably the finest set of horror films ever made.

reply

nice lists everyone! :)

reply

I like Swamp Thing as a kid

Die Hard is my favorite Christmas Movie!

reply

why did everyone list NON-sci-fi movies in a thread asking for sci-fi movies?

reply

Let's not forget about "Spaced Invaders"

reply

I can't believe no one mentioned Solar Babies yet, and Disney's The Black Hole.

reply

how come nobody has mentioned WAR GAMES

reply

Don't forget one of my favorite movies as a kid, CLOAK AND DAGGER. I used to watch that almost as much as Explorers and every other movie that has been posted here :)

reply

cloak n dagger and daryl were great long with explorers i had all 3 recorded on one tape as a kid and watched them over and over again

lets not forget Gothca , and was it the manhaton project? i think with mathew brodrick (mabybie) about the monkeys training to pilot bommers to drop nukes ?

reply

That's PROJECT X you're alluding to. That film was pretty good.

I would've mentioned BLACK HOLE (because I love it), but it just didn't seem to fit with EXPLORERS!

reply

heres a few I can remember...

Silent Running
Dreamscape
Real Genius
Beastmaster
Brainstorm
Tron
Wizard of Speed and Time
Runaway

all the rest have been said

reply

What about the garbage pail kids, i remember renting this film loads in the 80's. Watching the explorers on filmfour last night was very nostalgic as i used to love it as a kid but to be honest it's well made but not as fun as i thought it was, maybe it's just that i am grown up now . . .

Other great films from the 80's not mentioned yet;

Garbage pail kids the movie
stand by me
police academy
fright night
weird science

reply

Some great memories mentioned on this thread.

The 80s were the best decade for kids adventure films and will almost certainly NEVER be topped.

reply

Solarbabies.

Best film ever

Lady in White

Also a great film.

Going to the 70's now, but escape and return to witch mountain are great films.

And Watcher in the Woods.

reply

My brother and I were just talking about this movie i'm 31 and he's 27. we remember trying to build a spaceship in the backyard after seeing this movie. Don't forget to add E.T. to the movie list.

reply

Here's a really obscure one that I saw as a youngster and which left an indelible impression on me: Jack Arnold's 1958 opus, SPACE CHILDREN. It is actually an antiwar flick disguised as a kiddie sci-fi flick.
