Why are there 30 year olds in high school?

So you've got Molly Ringwald and that nerdy kid who are actually high school age, then these two jocks who look like they could be their fathers.

reply

Molly isn't 30 in that. But if she is then she is banging at that age.

Have you ever looked at high school yearbooks from the 70s and 80s? Teenagers then matured much more quickly. They didn't stay physically 12 until they turned 30 like they do today.

I found a 1980 year book photo online. Look at these people, especially the guy in the lower left corner. If you judge by today's appearances, you would think these kids were 25-40 years old.

People repeated grades a lot more back then too. No way that guy in the bottom left corner is under 25.

reply

This looks like a page of the teachers pictures, lol… I think Mr. Knapp taught social studies or something, lol.

reply

Mr. Knapp taught social studies by day, sex ed by night, and during lunch in the back of his van.

reply

Wonder what Mr. Knapp is up to these days.

Imagine he comes across this board and sees this, lmao. That’ll be wild.

I've noticed that too. I mean it.

Any thoughts on why that is?

Anyways. Estevez was born in 1962 so that made him about 22 when the movie was shot. A bit young to be the dad of a 16 year old Molly Ringwald or Anthony Michael Hall. Even Judd Nelson at 25 ... would have been a pretty young father, lol.

The age factor never bothered me because aside from that, the casting was really good. And the on screen chemistry between the actors was perfect to me.

reply

I agree. Estevez definitely didnt look 30. The only one who questionably might not pass for high school age was Judd Nelson but I knew kids in high school who looked 30 so its not that much of a stretch.

reply

Exactly. Same thing here 👍

reply

I didn't have any problem imagining Judd Nelson as a teen in this role. He played the role immature enough and had the "good hair".

reply

There's not. You're exaggerating.

This movie actually does a lot better during this time (and now) age casting wise than other films. Still, yes, two of the actors were too old to be playing the roles, but certainly not that old to the point where they look like parents of teenagers.

reply

Michael J. Fox was about 23 when he filmed Back to the Future where I guess he was supposed to be maybe 17 or 18. I think at the time he often played younger roles due to his height. A lot of TV shows and movies would use actors that were shorter than average to play younger roles since they wanted someone with more acting experience.

reply

At least he actually looked like he could be a teenager. For the most part. I don't usually mind if the actor is older, as long as they actually look like they could be younger. Too often you can tell that the actors are just too old for the parts and don't really pull it off very well.

reply

They all had a LOT of detention.
