What if "Back to the Future" took place in 1990?

What would it be like if Marty traveled from 2020 to 1990. What would be Doc's reaction to hearing that Donald Trump was president in 2020? What would he think about seeing footage of his older self on a smart phone? What song would Marty play to shock the teens of 1990?

reply

I don't know enough 2000s music but if I wrote it, I'd have him play it's 5 o clock somewhere by Alan Jackson.

It has to be a song that came recently after 1990 just like Chuck Berry's Johnny B Goode came out a few years after 1955. Has to be an iconic and influential song and guitar riff, I'm going with Smells like Teen Spirit since it was the anthem for the birth of the grunge movement. That said the movie wouldn't work aswell between 1990 and 2020.

reply

I would say something by the Killers

reply

Smells Like Teen Spirit would be my choice too. And then he'd descend into some Slipknot sounding music and say "I guess you guys aren't ready for that stuff yet...".

But yes it would never work as well switching between those two periods as it did with the 50's and 80's in the original.

Painkiller? Enter Sandman? Civil War? Fear Of The Dark? Thunderstruck? Right Now? Feed My Frankenstein? No More Tears?

Marty would not play anything...

He would shock them by telling them that rock is dead and showing the top 5 music videos of the day on YouTube...which are all rap/hip hop.

He would shock them by telling the young 1990's crowd that musical instruments of all types are not necessary anymore, even your voice can be fixed with auto-tune.

He would tell them that the MTV party like atmosphere at it's awards show is gone...replaced by serious kids yelling about gender equality and climate issues. (showing MTV award highlights)..

That would shock the 90's teen crowd.

Thing is, Marty would probably be PC himself. Come to think of it Marty wouldn't be a 'HE'!

reply

THATS a good movie! 2020 PC Marty meets 1985 Marty.

And mess up the space time continuum?

Some ideas:
- he scares George in the middle of the night by pretending to be “Harry Potter” and it inspires George to later write his own Wizarding World book series/movies
- Definitely “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for the song Marty plays in 1990. Maybe Marty gets rejected for his music in 2020 because he is into classic rock and his school and other local venues only want rap and Taylor Swift-style pop and won’t give him a chance to show his musical talents
- Everyone thinks Marty’s phone is some kind of super advanced Apple Newton
- Marty uses the alias of Leonardo DiCaprio
- Time Machine is a Tesla is some how connected to an app on Marty’s phone and he has to find a way to get the time machine feature to work when he loses his phone and/or it stops working
- Marty struggles to use an old computer and old phone and no internet
- Marty watches Bill Cosby or OJ Simpson on TV with his mom’s family and they all act completely normal like there is nothing wrong about him

Good ones!

would have to move it up to 1991--Nirvana did not hit it until then

But agree with everything else

Oh and Marty is more heavy set while they are so thin bc of increased calorie consumption and less exercise.

"would have to move it up to 1991--Nirvana did not hit it until then"

Ah, but the point of the "Johnny B Goode" scene is that Marty gave Chuck Berry the very idea to make the song. And it was only released after the movie took place.
Thus, it would make sense if Kurt Cobain heard Marty play "Teenage Spirit" in 1990 and was inspired by it.

reply

ok

reply

"Hey Kurt, it's Marvin. Your cousin - Marvin Cobain. Hey, you know that new sound you been lookin' for? Well listen to this!"

reply

BTTF is in 1955. Johnny B. Goode came out in 1958.

Smells like Teen Spirit came out in Sept of 91. It is believed that Cobain first had the idea in late 1990, but they didn't put most of the song together until all 3 members were riffing together in early 91. So that would make sense that in late 1990, Kurt's cousin, who was in the lead singer in a Tribute hair band called him so he could hear what would become his biggest song.

I don't think Marty would struggle to use an 1990 computer and old phone....he might pause but he'd be able to figure out something from that era. The lack of internet access though might frustrate him.
