I really don't care about the show Growing Pains. I watched it a few times and found it boring and uninteresting.
But I feel the need to comment because Mr. Cameron is being slandered on this board for standing up for morality whilst on this show.
People have called Mr. Cameron things like 'tyrant' for that.
Mr. Cameron is no tyrant.
You wanna know who the tyrants are? They are the makers of the show who were trying to force a kid (Mr. Cameron at the time) to do immoral things.
Why couldn't they just write a moral script? Would that kill them to write a moral script? No, it wouldn't, so what's the problem with them doing that?
Ditto with not hiring actors/actresses who are wannabe porn stars.
Remember, Mr. Cameron was a teen idol at that time, hence a lot of kids looked up to his character as a role model. They wanted to be just like him. If his character was pushing immorality on the show, then the kids who looked up to him would follow that bad example in real life.
Therefore, shame on the makers of the show for being tyrants who tried to use it to push an immoral agenda, and force a child actor to conform to that immorality.
Kudos to Mr. Cameron for standing up for morality and against that tyranny. I applaud him, as should everyone who is moral.
He was pushing his morals on other people. So what that the girl (forgot the actress's name) had posed for Playboy? It had no affect on the show or how she acted on the show. But to the holier-than-thou Cameron, it was the ultimate sin! Just like anything that anyone did that he did not agree with was.
It affects the audience of the show, who want to be like the actresses/actors on the show. It's called setting an example. The porn star wannabe was setting a very bad example.
Mr. Cameron was being responsible by refusing to send out bad messages that have the potential to ruin the lives of others (the audience members) who follow those messages.
Most people are intelligent enough to know the difference between what they see on television, and reality. And it wasn't just the "porn star wannabe". He was just petty when it came to things, and thought he should be able to control even the private lives of everyone on the show.
And it's not the job of entertainers to "set an example". Their job is to entertain. The parents are the ones that should be setting the examples, but far too many would prefer to be hypocrites ("Do what I say, not what I do" then wonder why they are not respected) and blame actors, musicians, sports players, anyone they can when something goes wrong.
Most people imitate characters and celebrities that they see on tv even when watching a fictional show.
Really? Nobody I know does that. Maybe you need to meet some more intelligent people.
The job of every responsible person is to set a moral example, not to promote evil.
Besides that, promoting evil is not synonymous with being entertaining.
Posing for an adult magazine, is not "promoting evil". And I know some Xtians who really do believe it is "moral" to bomb abortion clinics, even if innocent people get hurt in the process.
I agree with that, but that's a separate issue.
Celebrities are taken as examples for how to live one's life even if they do not want to or do not intend to or should not be.
No, it is not separate. And again, nobody I know thinks they should live their lives like a celebrity. Most of my friends (and I) liked (and still do to a point) bands like Motley Crue, Guns n Roses, etc. And none of us ran and did drugs, and the guys never beat their women.
You don't know how Satan works do you? Doors are opened to the demonic world, even by just the tiniest hint of something. One of the main reasons we have fallen so low morally is because we've been too passive on things and Satan is using that to his advantage.
I belong to Jesus: my Lord, Savior, my eternity, my everything. I love you, Jesus!
Yes, I know how "Satan" works. Satan was manufactured by church leaders to keep people in line. Just scare the hell out of some people - you will burn in hell if you don't do everything I say. Oh, and give me your money, it costs money to save souls.
I was around 12 years old at the time and I didn't even know Julie was in Playboy. Know why? My parents didn't get Playboy. How in the world would a kid have even known she did that? I was heartbroken when she was bounced from the show. When I found out much later that it was because of Kirk that she was fired, I lost all respect for him.
I thought Christianity taught forgiveness and acceptance. I also thought that people were able to redeem themselves. Kirk gave her no opportunity to do that and he showed himself as a shallow, rude, judgmental man. Growing Pains was about as bland as you could get. It was in no way off color or offensive. Kirk really had to look hard to find problems with the show, when what he should have been doing was trying to fix the problems within himself.
I think the "forgiveness and acceptance" only applies to those they choose to forgive and accept. In reality, christianity is about mind control, and condemning anyone that chooses to think freely, instead of being told what to think.
How in the world would a kid have even known she did that?
It was probably on the news, tabloids at the supermarkets, entertainment gossip TV shows, etc.
When I found out much later that it was because of Kirk that she was fired, I lost all respect for him.
Why didn't you instead lose respect for your wannabe pornstar heroine?
I thought Christianity taught forgiveness
Forgiveness requires a person to a> want to be forgiven and b> repent from his/her sinful ways. Do either of those apply to the pornstar wannabe? Maybe they do, but I haven't seen any evidence of that posted on this board. Feel free to post such evidence if it exists, such as her apology.
and acceptance
God never accepts sin, no.
I also thought that people were able to redeem themselves
Yes, but that again requires for them to a> want to redeem themselves and b> repent from their sinful ways. Do either of those apply to the pornstar wannabe?
Growing Pains was about as bland as you could get.
I've hardly ever watched the show so I'm not versed enough in it to comment a lot on this matter, but I've read on this board that they made 'phone sex' jokes. That contradicts what you said there. Most likely they had many other just as bad or worse things in the show too.

I was young when this was out and as far as I know, it was never on the news, or in tabloid magazines! I didn't even know about the playboy thing until after the show was over.
I speak my mind and if you don't like it then that's just too damn bad!!!
Here is what Kirk, and many Christians, don't understand. Religion is like a penis. It's okay to have one. It's okay to be proud of it. It is NOT okay to go around shoving it down everyone's throat.

Why is it okay for the makers of this show to shove their immorality down Mr. Cameron's and their viewers' throats?

I didn't realize the makers were shoving immorality down the viewers' throats. First of all, what is moral and immoral is subjective. Second, if Kirk thought it was so immoral, he could have quit. Third, if you thought the show was immoral, you had the option to not watch it. NOTHING was being shoved down the viewers' throats.

I don't know about the details discussed here about Kirk Cameron because we didn't get this show in my country and I had the chance to watch most of the episodes in 1989 and 1990 when I was 18 and living in USA.
I am not sure what you mean by "moral script" ? I haven't viewed any Growing Pains episode where the script was immoral. If you are referring to Mike Seaver's character, he was just a typical teenager who was making a lot of mistakes because he didn't know the difference between right and wrong. Overall, the show had a very positive and moral stance.
From reading the messages here, I understand that one actress got fired from the show, or Kirk Cameron got her fired because she was posing for Playboy? First of all, there is a huge difference between posing for playboy and being a porn star. I am not defending posing for playboy; I am just saying it is not on the same level as being a porn star.
Secondly, that should not be a reason to get fired from the show (unless it's in her contract that she cannot do that).
But most of all, one cannot and should not try to teach moral lessons to his co-stars or co-workers. People work together to achieve a common goal and unless their moral character is so bad that it is impacting the work that they do, nobody should try to get rid of them.
Off topic, when will they release the all the seasons on DVD ?
Lets put things in context here a young woman decides to pose naked for a magazine. I pretenious and self-rightous boy who worked with her did not like this so stompted his foot and whined a lot. Net result the girl got fired.
Lets not confuse morality or religion with being a brat.
If Mr Cameron was as devote to the bible as he proclaims he would examine the 10 commands very carefully and realise it states "Thou shalt not kill.".
With this in mind if he is such a beacon of morality based on his chosen holy book why was he not appearing publically deposing war around the world aruging that peace and harmony are devine (worth noting people tend to die when there is war normally murdered by one side or the other).
It would have been a far more productive use of his time in his teens than obsessing about a naked girl (then again he was a teenage boy).
Perhaps instead of trying to disprove evolution (which lets be frank it is something that has been established by multiple sources of corroborating evidence is not the best use of his time as he appear not to have spend any of it studying natural sciences.
These is also nothing in the bible which explicity says evolution is not true, even the catholic church has stated much of the bible is not and should not be interpreted literally.
Perhaps if he really wishes to help mankind he should focus on peace and harmony message and leave the rest to philosphers and scientists instead of silly old men who don't know why bananas fit in your hand!
I don't have a problem with him deciding upon becoming more religious that he didn't want to do more risque story lines but getting a co-worker fired for something that happened before she was on the show. Heck he had no problem doing a plot line where he posed nude
IIRC He was in an episode where he was in his underwear to take a test because he had written his answers on his shoes. It's been years since I watched the show but I don't remember him posing naked.
I am not a troll, but I believe in them since I see them every day on IMDB.
which lets be frank it is something that has been established by multiple sources of corroborating evidence
No it hasn't. Let's be frank and honest. evolution started out as an imagined story, and then was embellished over the years with other imagined stories. The embellished stories "corroborate" the original myth because the authors of those stories construct their stories to be compatible. That in no way indicates "evidence". LOL
is not the best use of his time
That statement is absurd. There is no possible better use of one's time than opposing evil. Opposing evil is the ideal use of one's time.
These is also nothing in the bible which explicity says evolution is not true,
Yes there is, most especially the entire Bible.
even the catholic church has stated much of the bible is not and should not be interpreted literally.
Who cares what the catholic church says? The catholic church makes up all kinds of evil crap.
And God never said to "interpret" the Bible at all. Much of the Bible does not require any "interpretation." "Interpretation," for the most part, is what evil people do to pretend that they can call the Bible a lie and fabricate their own evil imaginings to fit with their own evil desires, even though their evil imaginings are completely contrary to what God actually said.
he should focus on peace and harmony message
How can there be peace and harmony when children are en masse being brainwashed into your religion of darwinism? darwinists of your kind are the ones who are preventing peace and harmony by promoting evils such as that, in addition to with all of the other evils they promote.

Let's be honest. Evolution is a fact that started out as a theory based on observations made by Darwin. Over time, all of the evidence has fallen into place. Yes, there is evidence. And yes, evolution is reproducible in a lab, and HAS been reproduced in lab settings. Evolution is now considered a fact. Let's also be honest about the fact that you are just parroting what you have been told by other fundamentalist Christians. You don't have a degree in biology (I do) and you haven't read up and truly studied evolution. Evolution is the bedrock of biology. LOL all you want. It doesn't matter if you believe it or not, it is true.
I would also like to point out there is no religion called Darwinism.
Now, if you would like to discuss Growing Pains, go ahead. If you want to discuss your religion, go to a religious board.

My personal problem with Kirk Cameron is that he married Chelsea Noble during the series' run and the sanctimonious little twit didn't bother inviting any of his cast mates. Alan Thicke gave him a talking to about how disrespectful that was. And his mouthing off about certain storylines annoyed his cast mates, too.
