WB and Christopher Columbus Reportedly Planning New ‘Gremlins’ Movie

Deadline’s report details, “Franchise hopes abound down the road in Lord of the Rings The Hunt for Gollum, Practical Magic 2, DC’s Clayface and Supergirl, Drew Goddard’s incoming script for a new Matrix, a new Gremlins from Christopher Columbus and a Goonies treatment.”

Christopher Columbus was of course the writer of the original Steven Spielberg-produced Gremlins, so it’s very exciting to hear that Columbus is back on board with the franchise. It was Columbus who not only wrote the Joe Dante-directed horror classic but also conceived the idea in the first place, which garnered the interest of Spielberg. The rest is pop culture history.

Are we even close to coming near the end of "Movies From the 1980s That Need Sequels/Revivals/Reboots/Updating" yet?

Gremlins 3, followed by a prequel - Mogwai - showing us Gizmo's origin story, and then Gremlins versus Critters, which will be the first film in the 80s Comedy-Horror Small Monster Extended Cinematic Universe, which Warner Bros will keep going for the next twenty-five years until all your houses are so full of plushies you can't get inside them any more.

Oooh, it's Zach Galligan in a passing-of-the-torch supporting role! Ooooh, it's Phoebe Cates in a cameo! Oooh, it's Mrs Deagle's force ghost. Oooh, it's a CGI Dick Miller -- what a fitting tribute to a great man...

2020s mainstream pop culture. Ain't it something special?

I would like to see Mogwai and Gremlins vs Critters.

I thought Joe Dante teased this when that HBO Max animated series came out for the first time. So I would think he would be working closely with Columbus on it too. At least that's what gives me hope

Too late. It needed to be made in the pre-woke era to be any good, as nowadays characters and scripts are written with an agenda, and actors are cast to meet quotas, namely 'less white male' quotas.

Been saying it for a long time... Hollywood needs a reboot.
