Axel and Jenny's relationship

I think everyone was expecting Axel and Jenny to become lovers by the end of this film. I think the simple reason why they didn't was because Hollywood wasn't comfortable showing a black man and a white woman in that type of relationship.

When Sly Stallone was slated to star in the movie, Jenny was in fact the main character's love interest. That changed when Eddie became the lead instead.

What's your take on the Axel/Jenny relationship?

reply

This movie did not need a love interest, but if it was changed just because of Murphy, that's just stupid.

reply

I agree but let's be honest about it, it was a trade off. Someone (probably) decided that having Jenny as a love interest didn't make that big of a difference or they would have used a black actress instead. Let's not forget, Eddie had an asian love interest. I don't think it was as taboo as people are trying to make it seem.

And interestingly, there is a picture where Jenny and Axel are a bit more cozy on the Fandom page for Jenny Summers:

Could it be there was more that was filmed but didn't do much for the film in the final cut?

reply

Yes, that's a very cozy picture. It seems like just publicity photo, though.

It's interesting that two years later, the powers that be seemed reasonably comfortable having Charlotte Lewis (a British woman of Iraqi and Chilean descent) play his love interest in The Golden Child.

reply

Agreed that the love interest was not needed.

What’s funny coincidence is that I am just watching it right now, and I go on Movie Chat and see it trending. 😂

reply

I just watched it on tv as well!

reply

Oh, cool! :)

Was it on some tv channel or you streamed it?

I streamed it on Prime, felt like watching it for a while now as I haven’t seen it in about 20 years probably.

reply

It was on some tv channel. I actually planned on watching it again this summer. I haven't seen it since the 90s either.😊

Platonic friends but I think some elements from the Stallone script bled into the Murphy one. That suggestive pose she makes in the bedroom scene always struck me as kind of odd.

This classic movie didn't NEED a love story. It was a great story about 3 friends that live separate lives and one friend goes way out of his way and element to solve the murder of one of them. I think a love story between Axel and Jenny would have been incredibly out of place. It just wouldn't have worked in the action/comedy sense.
