Elizabeth Berridge - One of the worst acting performances ever?

I couldn't even take the movie seriously she was so bad as Constanze. Unbelievably dreadful.

From Wikipedia:

"Meg Tilly was cast as Mozart's wife Constanze, but she tore a ligament in her leg the day before shooting started. She was replaced by Elizabeth Berridge."

Berridge had no rehearsal time.

I thought Berridge did a fine job. Honestly, I have trouble picturing Meg Tilly in the role. It seems like she would come across as too harsh.

reply

Me too. I can't imagine Meg Tilly in the role with her meek voice, but Milos Forman seemed infatuated with her.

I think Elizabeth Berridge pulled off a decent performance. Not as remarkable as the two leading men, but then she was allowed less space to maneuver.

reply

Hmmm. I thought she was very memorable--in a good way--as Costanze. I thought she made a good counterpart to Hulce's Mozart. Never really considered people might have a problem with her performance, but obviously there's quite a few of you out there.

Berridge came off as too modern and money grubbing, whiny.

I take it you've never seen Splash?
Or any other Tom Hanks film for that matter?

Agree that was pretty bad, and her character was Annoying as hell.

" Look, there's two women fuc*ing a polar bear!"

reply

I don't know that I'd say one of the worst ever, but I will agree she's way out of her depth here, and the prestige of the film exacerbates this.

I don't know what you guys are watching, but I thought she was very good. Considering the limited material she had.

I doubt Meg Tilly could have done any better or even equaled the performance Elizabeth did.

reply

The only thing I objected to with Berridge is that she sounded like she came directly from Hollywood. She slurred words or would say "wanna" instead of want to, etc. I think Meg Tilly would have been better, different and better.

reply

i think it was great casting...she had a very youthful naive look that the part called for...a more seasoned actress would not be as convincing to play an innocent girl falling for Salieri's devious offer

reply

I agree with the "wanna"s. That should have been corrected.

At first I thought she sounded horrible but she really grew into the role and became more firey as we saw the relationship develop. By the end I thought she stood out and was very good in her role. Quite dynamic.

reply

I thought she was sweet. And she gave great décolletage.

What's decotellege?
