Honestly, WTF?! Are these two dating or something?
Actually, a few of the people in this movie are a bit "odd":
- David's mother eating raw corn - Jennifer calling Falken "amazing looking" - Jennifer drinking out of David's bathroom basin - the way the school principal walks with his butt sticking out - Melvin, anyone? - Jim (being some kind of early prototype of Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons)
The raw corn scene was great. I think the writer's commentary that the actor who played the dad ad libed that part. Great character acting, and choice of actor too.
What's odd about that? Isn't it more odd to have things 'cooked', when you think about it? No animal 'cooks' their food. Why would food always have to be 'warm' and 'processed'? So people can think humans are naturally 'meat-eaters', but can't EVEN think of eating raw corn as normal?
It's in its natural form, why not eat it that way? Any processing just removes healthy things from food. You should eat everything as raw as possible (and you definitely shouldn't eat animal parts).
- Jennifer calling Falken "amazing looking"
(I think you need a hyphen)
Well, Falken does look sort of 'ordinary' to me, but perhaps Jennifer is looking at it from now a 'mating' perspective, or a 'rock star' perspective (do 'rock stars' really look AMAZING instead of RIDICULOUS is a topic for another debate), but from a 'genius that can invent amazing things'.
Perhaps Jennifer would think Doc Brown also is 'amazing-looking'.
- Jennifer drinking out of David's bathroom basin
When you are thirsty, you'll drink almost anything, as long as it's not too disgusting. I don't see what the big deal is, I've drank from all kinds of taps, regardless of what room they are in; bathrooms, locker rooms, kitchens, hallways, etc. Water is water.
But bottled water is usually from a natural spring, making it less processed, more healthy, more alive and more delicious. Plus, it goes through the throat so quickly and easily compared to tap water, which has that 'chlorine' taste that you have to 'gulp down' with effort.
To tap water, you always want to put something to make it taste better, but with spring water, you don't - you just want more spring water.
Try to experiment if in doubt; fill a 1,5 liter bottle of tap water, and purchase a 1,5 liter bottle of spring water. Drink them one by one with 'one gulp'.
If drinking three liters of water seems a bit excessive, or if you are not very thirsty, you can drink the first bottle on one day, the other bottle the next day. The result should still be the same; tap water is going to be more difficult to get down, and probably impossible with one gulp, whereas the spring water will flow down easily and smoothly without problems.
Of course if you live in Iceland, this might be different (they probably get their tap water from glaciers or something).
Tap water is SO processed, that if you familiarize yourself with the process, you probably won't ever want to drink it again. It's also very dead. That's the only reason why it has less bacteria - it's so bad that EVEN BACTERIA won't be able to live in it. Plus, tap water makes my stomach hurt.

Finally the voice of reason!

no you've ruined it , shouldve quit while you were ahead
- the way the school principal walks with his butt sticking out
Didn't ever notice this one - I don't really pay attention to butt positions.
- Melvin, anyone?
What? Melvin was a realistic nerd. Actually, probably the only realistic nerd I've seen in a hollyweird movie. There are bound to be others, but I can't think of them right now. I mean, I was so glad to finally see a "proper nerd" instead of some 'Brad Pitt with glasses'.

What's your point here? What's so odd about this? It's just a human sterotype, and a human type as well. Those kind of people exist. As you can see from this movie.
So he was a fat, has a beard, and .. what was your point again? I don't get this one at all. Fat, bearded guys are very common. Even in movies.
Even the comic book guy is just a regular guy, except that he speaks and acts a bit eccentrically sometimes.
To me, the most odd thing about this movie is that people actually want this boring, mundane horror-fest of a world to just keep going as it is, with bad dog owners and handlers (you see them even in this movie), people actually -having- carnivore pets that they let poo and pee all over the place, so you have to choose your path very carefully during the winter and after the snow has melted (a lot of yellow snow is a disgusting sight), bad parents that grow kids completely wrong, wars going on all the time, now with the added convenience of killer drones, migrants from poor countries now flooding to rich countries, destroying certain cultures and races forever..
..I think a nuclear war would actually be a great relief, and Falken speaks sense until he changes his mind.
Melvin seems pretty normal, when you compare what's considered normal in this world. Is it really normal to drink 500-kg herbivore's tit secretion? Or systematically enslave, torture and murder masses and masses of innocent animals, just so people could consume their flesh?
I don't have a huge problem with drinking water from the bathroom basin. After all, it's the same water that comes out of any other tap in the house. But Jennifer went into the bathroom empty-handed and came out holding a glass of water, which means she would have grabbed the same glass that David uses to brush his teeth. Now THAT'S weird behaviour.
Maybe David just uses that glass to DRINK out of, not brush his teeth out of.
Effing hilarity here. You think a cup means that's where he stores his tooth brush. When in fact it's just a cup that he drinks out of.
Show me where David stores his brush in that cup and I'll retract.

In regards to her putting his gum in her mouth, yeah I got the impression they were lovers. She had a hot secretary vibe about her.
- David's mother eating raw corn - It was a common thing back then. A lot of people believed cooking vegetables killed the vitamins. I think it was also just a joke in the film.
- Jennifer calling Falken "amazing looking" - Amazing looking doesn't have to mean good looking. I think we are meant to believe he is an eccentric mad scientist or something.
- Jennifer drinking out of David's bathroom basin - I got the impression she felt a bit awkward around his parents and it was less embarrasing then going down stairs.
- the way the school principal walks with his butt sticking out - More comic relief.
- Melvin, anyone? - Comic relief, reminded me of Jerry Lewis a little.
- Jim (being some kind of early prototype of Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons) - Comic relief again.
With the last three, it was film aimed at kids and early teens, having odd characters seems to be what film makers think kids like.
