She put McKittrick's gum...in her mouth!

Honestly, WTF?! Are these two dating or something?

Actually, a few of the people in this movie are a bit "odd":

- David's mother eating raw corn
- Jennifer calling Falken "amazing looking"
- Jennifer drinking out of David's bathroom basin
- the way the school principal walks with his butt sticking out
- Melvin, anyone?
- Jim (being some kind of early prototype of Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons)

reply

Yes, the gum was odd. You didn't actually see gum though, I doubt the actress really did it.

The corn: I know people who do eat raw vegetables and swear about the vitamins
Jennifer and Falken: I always thought that was really weird. It's not even like he was a "hot" older guy, didn't look like a rock star. And he looked way older than 41.
Bathroom water: Yuck!
Principal's butt: Never noticed, lol
Melvin: I just couldn't stand him. I would rather Jim had figured out about Falken
Jim: Yes, early Comic Book Guy. But seemed pretty cool.

One more thing...the news bulletin about the "fire at a prophylactic recycling centre". LoL!

reply

Totally missed that!!

reply

That would be a drug recycling center. “prophylactic” is anything medical to prevent a disease. It’s not a word that was invented to mean a condom.

reply

Bathroom water: Yuck!

I don't see what's so odd about this. The water from the bathroom sink is just the same as it would be out of the kitchen sink. It wasn't like she scooped water out of the toilet.

I guess it's just a psychological thing for people who drink tap water. I only drink bottled water, but I have to admit, I wouldn't drink tap from the bathroom either.

reply

I buy one bottle a week and refill it out of mens room faucets. The majority of the bad water I find comes from fountains.

reply

"I only drink bottled water, but I have to admit, I wouldn't drink tap from the bathroom either."

LOL.

reply

Only drink bottled water? Are you serious?

Herbert West: Who's going to believe a talking head? Get a job in a sideshow.

reply

The tap water in my town tastes like garbage. When I lived one town over, if you were constipated and drank a glass of tap water, by night time...let's just say you were definitely not constipated anymore.

Even "clean" bathrooms are full of bacteria floating around in the air, getting on faucets, drinking glasses, toothbrushes, etc. Bathrooms are definitely dirtier than kitchens, that don't tend to have fecal coliform bacteria:

Do you brush your teeth in the bathroom? Because if you do it in the kitchen sink I'm going to vomit.

Right? I mean, you use that water when you brush your teeth, so why not? Unless the OP pees in the sink or something...

"Now you start using your head. That's that lump that's three feet above your ass!"

During the scene in David's room, Jennifer asks how old Dr. Falken was when he died.
David said Dr. Falken died at the age of 41. Jennifer replies - "that's old." The age of 41 is not old. I'm 42 years-old. 82 is old. Not 41.

reply

At 16, I thought 41 was old.

reply

That line about 41 being old is intended to play as a joke and it does.
Got a big laugh in the theater.
Like many in the script, the line also supports the recurring theme of both kids thinking they’re too young to die and expecting there to be plenty of time for living ahead.

BTW, Falken was 41 at the time of his death in 1973.
Presuming this movie takes place in 1983, he’d be 51.

reply

his death cant have been (faked) 10 years before the events of the movie surely?

reply

Why not? What's weird about that?

reply

well , the lifecycle of the computer systems etc.
This film about cutting edge technology , is designed by a guy who died 10 years earlier ?
computers were in their infancy so 10 years is much more of a difference back then that it would be now.

reply

This is a government computer system. I know from experience they hold on them for as LONG as Possible to save a buck.

I've pulled corn straight off the plant and eaten it. It's delicious. What's the problem? The problem is slathering butter all over it! That's the problem!

I have no idea if it was a joke or was it suppose to go somewhere. Just really random, and yes, this movie does have some odd characters.

reply

Yeah....but what a delicious problem it is!

reply

Yeah.

I wouldn't mind her putting my gum in her mouth, she was good looking. Poor lady died from complications from breast cancer. Saw her on an episode of Buck Roger's and she looked great in her spandex outfit. I've always laughed that he didn't just log on to one of their computers to just show them what he and Joshua were playing. But then again it's just a movie so they had to drag it out.

1. Yeah, that was pretty f'd up. I think it IS to imply that she's doing him. Later, one of the first things Falken says upon re-meeting him is, "I see your wife still picks out your ties." So, I think they're riding the high hard one.

2. Eh, the corn thing was just a joke.

3. Never understood this either. He was NOT amazing-looking.

4. I just rewatched the movie for the first time after god knows how long (I'm exactly David's age, and this movie was constantly on HBO back in the day) and I just noticed the principal's butt. It's like he had a stick jammed up it or something.

5. Melvin was comic relief. Typical aspergers computer nerd.

6. I'd be surprised if the Comic Book Guy wasn't based on Jim.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

reply

The raw corn was odd but mothers do that, they think they are being healthy.

"Amazing Looking" I don't think she meant good looking, more odd or bizarre. The idea is to set this guy up as mysterious and eccentric. Which he is.

Bathroom water? You use it to rinse your mouth after brushing your teeth right?

Never noticed the principal.

Melvin reminded me of the Nutty Professor or Jerry Lewis in general.

Jim seemed pretty normal. Early computer nerd but can still blend with the normal crowd.

Sometimes a movie or tv show plot is so stupid that only the stupid can understand it.
