Why so much love for this pile of crap?

I hate hate hate this movie with as much hate as I have for anything. People worship this movie as if it's a brilliant piece of film making. Two and a half hours of overacting and ridiculous scene after ridiculous scene. I saw it once and will never ever watch it again. And the idolization of Pacino's character is really stupid. Yeah let me get a tattoo of a murdering, lowlife drug dealer and addict because I'm inspired by his rise to the top. Please.A career low for everyone involved in this pile of crap. Thank You.

I think the people who want to "be" like Tony Montana are kinda looking at it the wrong way.

Scarface is a straight up morality tale (almost an Opera). at first Tony thinks he is getting everything, (and he kind of is) he gets the money, the power, the woman he wants etc.

But it all comes at a huge cost that he just does not see coming. When he is sat in the restaurant just before he does the "bad guy" speech. He complains "is this it"?..."Is this what it's all about"?.

So although he has everything he thought he wanted, he is insanely unhappy, and already spiralling into his own drunken, cocaine fuelled doom.

Scarface is an excellent film, and is rightly considered a classic. Yes, it's over the top (wasn't everything in the 80's?) but it is still a classic.

"I'm leaving, i've assessed the situation, and i'm going".

I used to like Scarface when I was a teenager but now in my late 20's I just don't like it. Pacino's character is way too over the top almost like a cartoon character. His constant cheesy one liners get annoying too. The movie overall just feels dated.

Personally I find Carlito's Way to be the much superior film.

I think it's best to look at this movie in a completely different context, like how the American Dream can be achieved by anybody in anywhere no matter your background or personality.

Taste in movies, books and music (art in general) is always subjective. That being said, this movie is a classic. It captured so much of early 80's perfectly. Don't like it, then don't watch it. Simple as that.

LOL! So true, But that's what pretentious a-holes who want attention, do nowadays, Love hated movies and Hate beloved movies. There is always one on every thread. If Scarface was hated by the masses, then the OP would be like, "I don't see why everyone hates this movie so much, I loved it myself".

reply

Totally agree with the OP and others who dislike this movie. How it is considered a great is beyond me.

I don't mind the plot so much, after all the plot is no weaker than the endless rubbish we are fed these days. But it's the acting, cinematography and the swearing that really puts me off. Most of the time Al Pacino's character is swearing just for the sake of swearing and not because the situation actually merits it. The acting, well Al Pacino has had finer days, unfortunately for him and his fans, none of those days were after this movie. Perhaps Scarface was the beginning of the end for him. Cinematography? What cinematography?

It's watch-able, I don't think it's as great as everyone says it is, and it' certainly not that well made and directed.

I find it laughable that so many rappers and young thugs love this movie like it's some gospel for their own life. It's cringeworthy 

I understand where you are coming from , it has gotten into peoples psyche , lots of little drug dealers and criminals running around who have based , or tried to imitate Tony Montana ,
and that is because the movie is soo good, Pacino did a truly brilliant acting job , Stone wrote the screenplay , and de Palma knows how to "image" a film so its burned into your brain .. so unlike Godfather, Untouchables ,.. this one really got into peoples heads .. so the words " never get high on your own supply" " Don't call me baby I,m not your baby" .. these are terms people have adopted and have become part of society , albeit the underground one !

It's not that I'm inspired by his rise to the top exactly, but I enjoy that he's willing to utterly destroy anyone that opposes him. There's no such thing as being underhanded. There's winning and losing. Even it's a pyrrhic victory in the end, it doesn't really matter. Make them pay for even daring to challenge you. It's like a gangster version of "Conan, what it best in life?".
