The extended version of this movie is terrible

I am watching the version that has parts that were not in the DVD I have and this music in these scenes is very bad I feel like I should be watching a surfing movie. Has anyone else seen this version?

reply

I have not yet seen the original cut but I love the extended version. The music seems very fitting and the tempo of the movie feels right. Maybe the original is better but the extended version is good as well.

You are so WRONG with that statement. That "surf music" as you call it isn't surf music at all; it is actually authentic period music from the time when the film is supposed to take place. It is the EXACT music that the characters in the film would be listening to! Coppola himself thought the original music was too dramatic and that it took away from the realism. The early rock music gives the Outsiders more of a hard edged feel, while cutting down on the sappy feeling the original sometimes had. FYI, the soundtrack that you love was basically forced upon the director at the time of release, simply to appeal to a broader, more mainstream audience. Coppola must have really hated it a lot to cut a soundtrack created by his own father! Now it feels like a proper period piece, more in the style of the (still superior) Rumble Fish. As far as the many new scenes go; they are fascinating to see after so many years, and they are all recognizable to anyone who has read the classic book. I'm grateful for the chance to finally be able to see Coppola's true vision for this film.

I've only seen the extended version and the surfer music during the dramatic scenes really ruined the film for me. You have characters running away from home, rushing into burning buildings, and dying to an upbeat "zainy" track. I think the film flowed well though and is probably better than the theatrical cut in terms of content.

The score sucks major ass.

I just saw the new cut and (sigh) this could of gone in the place of good extended cuts if the music wasn't poorly placed and overused. This should of been a mix of the original score and new music. The music fits some places, like the opening at the movie theater and the rumble, but it went into Lucas territory during the Church Fire scene and Dallas's death, it became annoying and it felt like Coppola had no idea what new music to use in these scene so he decided to wing it, and that's rarely a good thing. The new footage is great and should of been in the film to begin with, but the music kills it. If the music was well made along with the new footage included, I could of easily given this a 10/10 (a rating I rarely give) but the way this cut is I can only find it it my heart to give this a 6/10. Bad music can kill a movie just as easily as bad writing, directing, acting and this is a prime example of that.

I don’t understand what you are talking about. They added surfing scenes to this? Isn’t it set in Oklahoma, a landlocked state?

So there is more footage? When I first saw this movie, I thought the pacing was pretty solid but then the last five minutes seemed so rushed.

It was only terrible because Francis Ford Coppola decided to mess up the soundtrack. Otherwise, it filled in exactly the blanks we needed for the story and the characters that should never have been cut in the first place.

If they would’ve just kept the contemporary soundtrack that otherwise fit the mood very very well, then it would’ve been perfect. Not only was the music awful, but it just BLARED over certain scenes and made it impossible to hear the actors’ lines during whatever was going on. I will admit that this is the only time I wanted to take my DVD of this and personally edit the soundtrack music back to the way it should’ve been. I’ve never felt that way about a movie before.

I just watched it for the first time, the new Complete Novel UHD, and I loved the music. It's fitting with the greaser guys. According to the commentary, Coppola says the original score was too ott and made the scenes too obvious and melodramatic but he couldn't say that to the composer (his father)

reply

I don’t know what Coppola was smoking when he said that but he has that completely backwards. The original contemporary soundtrack was completely unique to the tone of the story. The music he replaced it with is not only the one that’s too “obvious and melodramatic,” but it takes you right out of the movie.
