Did anybody notice?

...that the cinematographer, Peter Suschitzky, was the same guy that photographed Empire Strikes Back, arguably the best of all Star Wars Movies.
I still think the look to this movie is beautiful. It's hard to tell how bad the production design was or wasn't because Susch knew how to light and shoot the sets- there's a regal quality to the colors, that looks much richer than most movies, especially for 1983- this guy must have had great family photos!!

Say what you will about Krull as a Star Wars rip-off, but at least they hired the right people. It's always been a HUGE gamble to make a big budget movie, and unfortunately this one had to settle for the cult follwing, which usually means flop and the box office.

And just so we're all clear here, a 5.9 rating for this film is horse@#$%! This is a good movie- not great, I gave it a 7 initially, but might have to stuff the box to help offset the morons who gave it a 1 because it's a supposed star wars rip-off. Losers.

I agree to you: To me this movie is also very beautifully shot and definitly better than 5.9.
But I also really like the production design. At least most of it: The interiors of the castle in the beginning and the outside of the Black Fortest look pretty cheap and fake to me.

He's also done cinematography for David Cronenberg. I don't know 7. I think 6 or 6.5 is appropriate. Some of the action is well done, like the castle attack.

Love this movie! Totally beautiful to look at! Especially the capturing the firemares scene! Breath taking! I thought the production value for the Black Fortress was pretty good for it's time.

Still couldn't see your post haha! :) the last 2 posts after me. It just gets ridiculous to see these trolls come on here who don't have a life.

I don't think it's a good movie. Not even an ok one. I think it started off that way, but started to tank towards the mid-end. The plot just fell apart.

Urgo was an idiot. He could have turned into anything any time he wanted, but instead hides behind people much weaker than him.

The beast was a total moron. Don't want yiur enemy's kid to rule and kill you? Kill that princess you're holding onto. Also, if he has the power to give the Cyclops powers, you'd think a geoup of men would pose an omnipotent being like that no threat.

The Glaive was the worst and most pointless all-power weapon ever. Totally useless compared to Colwyn's fire power; which he didn't use until the end.

Yes, the Glaive had an impressive design but it was barely used, it was like it was made mostly for the poster of the film.. He could have used it countless times against the Slayers, save a lot of lives but.. no, he wasted until the very end..

Fanboy : a person who does not think while watching.

The score by James Horner is also pretty good.

I totally agree. In the 80's movies were very hit or miss when it came to film stock and production clarity. Judging from their outcome you could completely tell the difference between a small or big production. And this movie had fantastic color, lighting, clarity, and effects.

If you look at some Arnold Schartzenegger films from the 80's. One movie can look like a cheap awful mess (the Running Man) and another can look beautiful and modern even in today's standards (like Predator)

I don't see Krull as a star wars rip off at all. They are nothing alike.

Actually Suschitzky should have been nominated for an Oscar for his cinematography. I can't think of a single shot in any of the Star Wars films that can match some of the location work in KRULL.

reply

The only thing I was disappointed about with Krull was that he didn't use the damn Glaive until the end. It could've come in very handy many times on the journey. I still love it though. One of my childhood favorites.

reply

I read an early script for KRULL and during the WIDOW OF THE WEB sequence, Colwyn came in and killed the crystal spider with the Glaive. Smashed the spider into a million pieces.

Now that would have been cool
