De Niro's best performance?

I think so. Anyone else agree?

He was very good in The King of Comedy. But it is not comparable with his work in Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Godfather II and The Deer Hunter. These roles established him as one of the best actors of all time.

This is - excuse me - a damn fine cup of coffee.

"Jackie Brown" deserves to be up there too!

i could easily say so. however he seems to have just a few more highlight scenes in raging bull than in king of comedy... so for me it goes:

- Raging Bull
- The Deer Hunter
- Once Upon a Time in America
- Taxi Driver
- The King of Comedy
- The Godfather: Part II

however they are all so good that its easily interchangeable

It's definitely amongst his top 5 best performances.
Also, one of my favorite Scorsese films.

"Just another freak, in freak kingdom."

It's certainly one of his best. He was good in several other roles: Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Deerhunter, and more. He's just a great actor.

He is fantastic in everything before 1994 but surprised no one has mentioned midnight run. Sorry to see how far he has fallen. Does not seem to give a rats about it anymore

What is great about his performance is that he really shows here that he has range as an actor. His typical mannerisms and tics are all gone, he really transforms himself into someone else here. So many great actors, De Niro included, kind of become a parody of themselves and never fully escape the mannerisms and style they're know for, especially in their later years: Pacino, Hoffman, Walken, Nicholson, Spacey, Malkovich, De Niro, always pretty much the same, so roles like these are refreshing.

Yes, well said. If you wanted to prove that he is really an actor who can disappear into a role, this is the best example to show it.

I do have to agree! If you showed me this against just one of his other great performances, I wouldn't be sure. But this is more different from his other roles than they are from each other, so I think it's his best acting job.

Absolutely, not only his best but, one the ten greatest EVER. Extremely difficult role, especially for a great lead actor like him. Also, while I think Scorsese is a good director, his career would be very different without De Niro. De Niro did for this film what Robert Walker did for Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train". Turned an above average film into a great one.
