Music score is so horribly dated.
The music in Tootsie is so dated that I completely forgot that this style of music even existed, even though I was alive at the time.

the whole movie hasnt aged very well, it even has a made-for-tv feel to it.
shareLots of films seem that way when time passes, it's because styles change as do production values. The French Connection once seemed incredibly egdy, and now it's like an episode of CSI.
As for the music; what a lot of people seem to be forgetting is that Tootsie isn't just about an actor who gets a job on soap, it's that the whole film is set up like a soap. It's like a parody / satire of daytime (80's) TV wrapped around a romance. I always felt Grusin was aware of this, and made some of the music for the movie deliberately daytime TV-ish. It's a nice mesh of daytime TV style music, jazzy interludes, and of course the obligatory romantic ballad (still in keeping with soaps). I love the score, and when you take into account the fact it was referencing music on TV at the time, it makes it even better. Some may say it dates, but that's not an issue for me. If it had a 'timeless' instrumental score, it would stand out less, and it wouldn't fit a movie that was far from being a straight romance. The fact that it wasn't a straight romance, but also a satire, means the score being satirical (for me) makes it even better.
Isn't EVERYTHING dated? The main theme song is pretty nice. Its just a simple love song.
"Life is like a box of Krispy Kreme donuts".
It is very 80s but it's a beautiful score.
shareWhat are they supposed to do, go back in their time machine and put in some ugly modern pop sounds with autotune?
shareI kept thinking it sounded more like a TV theme song rather than a movie score.
