Rank the Don Bluth movies you have seen from best to worst.

"Music comes from within, from your heart and from your soul."

Rank the Don Bluth movies you have seen from best to worst, give a mark out of 10(if you have voted) and then write two or three sentences or so on why you like or hate the movie. I will give my verdicts.

1. THE SECRET OF NIMH-(10/10) I will confess I didn't see this until recently, and I loved it at first sight. I haven't read the book in its entirety, but I rarely judge a film by how unfaithful or faithful it is to the book. The animation is stunning, with excellent character animation. The music score by the wonderful Jerry Goldsmith is phenommonal, the song in the background of one scene was heart-rending. The voice-talents are spot on, especially the late Dom DeLuise and Derek Jacobi as Jeremy and Nicodemus. Jenner isn't the most sinister of all villains, but he is very convincing. I will say the sequel was completely unneccessary, its only redeeming quality being the voice cast, who had some pathetic dialogue to work with.

2. ANASTASIA-(9/10) I loved this film when I was 10, and now I am 17 and I still do. I got it on video 2 years ago, and all those wonderful memories came back. The animation is beautiful, and the songs are actually the film's main merit, Once Upon A December especially. The characters are engaging and funny, and the top notch voice talents from Christopher Lloyd, Kelsey Grammer, Meg Ryan and Angela Lansbury bring to life a beautiful, well-told story of the last Romanov princess. True, it is historically inaccurate, and obviously aimed at kids, butso was Pocahontas, and that was a beautiful film too.

3. AMERICAN TAIL-(9/10) For a long time, I thought this was the best Bluth movie, til I saw Secret of Nimh. The animation is stunning, very like the style of the Rescuers, and the songs especially Somewhere Out There were beautiful. The story, while slow at times, is genuinely poignant at times, and made me cry at times. The last time I cried in an animation was during Once Upon a Forest. Phillip Glasser was sweet as Fieval, but he does lack the singing ability, but as he was very young, it is forgiven. The other vocal talents were exceptional, as always the case with Bluth movies.

4. THE LAND BEFORE TIME-(9/10) This was a charming and often moving film of friendship and sometimes heartache. The animation was beautiful, and the music score by James Horner added to the emotion, that is lacking in the countless sequels. The vocal talents of the youngsters were a delight, especially Judith Barsi as Ducky, who was murdered not long after she voiced Anne Marie in All Dogs Go To Heaven. The shapteeth are a bit frightening for youngsters, and sometimes the story is a bit slow, but overall a beautiful film that is actually better than most of the 60s-80s Disney movies.

5. PEBBLE AND THE PENGUIN-(8/10) I don't get the low rating for this movie, as I honestly think it is one of the better Bluth movies. Sure it is flawed, almost all the movies I've reviewed are. The animation is mostly very good like in the killer whales scene, but in Drake's song there are a lot of colour changes, and Drake's animation was rather unimpressive. The songs, especially Now and Forever and Sometimes I Wonder were lovely, the only song I didn't like was Good Ship Misery, as all the vocalists did was shout, and it sounded horrible. The story is actually imaginative, though slow-moving at times. I don't get why people are so fussed about Rocko flying. Very few people have criticised Dumbo being able to fly, or that Beast turns into a human, not that either character need criticising. The voice talents were what made the movie, there were critical reviews(not on IMDB) that said the characterisations were racist, and they are not. James Belushi steals the show, Martin Short and Annie Golden are sweet, and Tim Curry(whose Drake sounded a lot like Jenner) sang magnificently in Don't Make Me Laugh. (it's the best I heard him sing since Blue Money)

6. ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN-(7/10) The main merit of this movie is the character of Anne Marie, she was really sweet and likeable. I thought the animation was excellent, and on the whole the voice talents were very good(Ken Page's King Gator was a hoot). Carface is a very convincing villain, and Vic Tayback's voice over was brilliant. However the story was clumsy and unfocused in the middle half, and there are some scenes like Charlie's dream and the ending(which was sad) that young children will find upsetting. I also didn't like the songs very much, they seemed bland and didn't seem to fit, and Dom DeLuise has done much better singing before, though the worst he's sang was in the otherwise hugely enjoyable Lion of Oz. The sequel wasn't terrible, but not actually true to the first film in terms of story and animation.

7. THUMBELINA-(7/10) A lot of people say it is worse than Pebble and the Penguin, but it is rated higher, which I still don't get. I don't think Thumbelina is that bad, but it is one of the weaker Bluth movies, though not the worst. The animation is nice in the song numbers, but sometimes especially in the latter half it is a bit lifeless. The songs are very pleasant, particularly Let Me Be Your Wings, but I have heard better in animations. Jodi Benson, who I have loved since Little Mermaid, is great as Thumbelina, and the other voices aren't bad either, eapecially Jaquimo. The story, while having some made up touches, remains true to the Hans Christian fairytale. In conclusion, a sweet, flawed but enjoyable film.

8. BARTOK THE MAGNIFICENT-(7/10) It is nowhwere near as good as Anastasia, but it is very entertaining. Bartok is annoying, and Ludmilla is a little over the top, but Kelsey Grammer was perfect in every way as Zozi. The animation wasn't bad, though in the scarier bits was a bit flat, and the songs, while tuneful, aren't particularly memorable. The voice talents are impeccable, namely Kelsey Grammer and Tim Curry as the charming and debonair large-headed skull.

9. TROLL IN CENTRAL PARK-(6/10)A very good voice cast and some nice music save an otherwise forgettable film. The animation is mostly unimpressive with very flat backgrounds, though in the musical numbers it actually wasn't too bad. The songs by Cynthia Weil while not memorable, are quite nice, likewise with the incidental music. Stanley is charming, but Gnorga is very frightening(though Cloris Leachman did a great job voicing her). Gus and Stanley didn't quite have the chemistry that they should have had. There were attempts at humour, but didn't quite deliver due to the lacklustre plot.

10. ROCK A DOODLE DOO-(6/10) This is definitely the weakest Bluth movie. I know I gave it the same score as Central Park, but I honestly didn't think the film was complete execrement. The animation was okay, but the live action bits were very jarring indeed. The songs were lacklustre,(the owl songs sounded the same all the time) and despite Phil Harris's excellent voicing, the story, which was very thin, was too heavily-reliant on the narration and got distracting. Edmund's speech impediment was annoying, but I didn't hate the character. The best character has to be the Grand Duke, voiced wonderfully by Christopher Plummer. I really wouldn't want to mess with him. There are some good lines, namely "if I kill my nephew would it be murder or charity" proving the Duke had the best lines. Not complete execrement, but could have been so much better.

I haven't seen Titan AE, but I will see it, after hearing good things about it.
Anyway, please feel free to post your thoughts, and if you want to contact me, email me at [email protected].

1. The Secret of NIMH
2. The Land Before Time.

The rest are mediocre or complete crap compared to a lot of other animated movies.

Titan A.E. - 10/10 The one Bluth movie I still watch on the regular. It's a real shame this movie "flopped". I'm sure Bluth would have created many more wonderful films with FOX.

The Secret of NIMH - 9/10 Still holds a place in my heart. Saw it as a kid & still have the graphic novel from when the movie was released.

An American Tail - 8/10 Wonderful story. I do like part 2 better, but that's not a Bluth film.

The Land Before Time - 7/10 Actually haven't seen this movie in years & years. But I remember liking it.

All Dogs Go to Heaven - 5/10 Meh. I remember not liking this one too much. Was okay, but nothing special. Again, haven't seen in years.

Rock-a-Doodle - 3/10 Didn't like this at all. Only saw it once.

Anastasia - 1/10 Didn't like anything about this movie. Again, only saw once.

1. Secret of NIMH (10/10) One of my favourite films of all time. It treated you like an adult, it didn't pull anything on you. I probably wouldn't have heard of the movie if it wasn't for the Nostalgia Critic, if you haven't already, check him out. While I do love the movie, I had to watch it a few times to get the real effect of it (like Citizen Kane)

2. The Land Before Time (8/10) It is his most popular movie, and it really is hard not to love. The animation is nice for the time. Oh and of course there's the whole matter of Little Foot's mother dying :'(.

3. Anastasia (8/10) After about nine years of crap he returned to awesome with this movie. This movie has the first good songs in a Bluth movie that I've seen. Above all it had a truly engrossing story, which I think are not very present in non-PIXAR animated movies.

4. All Dogs Go To Heaven (7/10)This is probably his most dramatic film (that was done well at least). It's one of those movies that makes me cry every time. The songs however are not very good, or memorable. The animation is also kind of sloppy.

5. Titan AE (7/10)I haven't seen the whole thing but what I did see was pretty damn entertaining. The story seemed really interesting, and the characters were fun. The animation however steals the show. It reminds me of like if Star Wars was seen with the One Ring of Power on (a recipe for kick ass).

6. An American Tail (6/10) I liked the animation and the character of Fievel, but that was about it. The plot was weak and rather depressing.

5. Thumbelina (3/10) I really hate this movie. The animation is ugly the songs are crap, and the story was a run of the mill Disney knock off.

6. Pebble and the Penguin (2/10) Sloppy animation, bad songs, detestable characters, and the matter of ROCKO FLYING WHAT IN THE HELL!!

7. Stanley's Magic Garden aka A Troll in Central Park (1/10) I used to like it, when I was two. Now I can't even sit through it. It is mindless pandering and filler throughout with no respect for anyones intelligence. I honestly cannot make it through the whole thing.

There you have it, from the top of the line to the bottom of the barrel it's Don's career.

I haven't seen Rock-A-Doodle and I do not plan to.

The stamp of mediocrity!

Damn this is hard! Well, #1 is easy, but 2-5 are all neck and neck.

1) Without a doubt The Secret of Nimh is Don Bluth's crowning achievement in his long and successful career. The art direction, the animation, the music and the hand drawn effects are all astounding for 1982, but most importantly, the emotionally compelling storyline and richly developed characters make this the animated film to top all animated films. I cannot say enough about NIMH. Mrs. Brisby's transformation from just another field mouse to the savior of her family is humbling to say the least. There really is no other animated movie like it.

2) The Land Before Time may be his most child-oriented movie, having a little bit lighter tone than his other films from the 80s, but it still deals with some pretty difficult subjects like confusion, despair, superiority complex, and of course, death. If you did not cry when watching this movie - whether from the simple, honest love shown in Little Foot's family at the beginning, to the tear jerking moments later on - you are not human! The lessons in this movie are so simple yet so moving. Stick by your friends, love your family, and you will overcome any obstacle.

3) An American Tail is very similar to Land Before Time in that you have a lovable, innocent and naive young protagonist who learns about life the hard way - through loss and difficult challenges. But how else does one truly grow up? This honesty, not in the slightest dumbed down for children, is what made Bluth such a great director and why his 80s movies are always regarded as his best. An American Tail has beautiful, lush animation and his most memorable soundtrack - a winning combination. I did not feel as strong an emotional connection to the characters like I did in NIMH or LBT, but it's still better than most of Disney's animated movies.

4) All Dogs Go To Heaven was the only 80's Bluth movie that I did not see in full until I was much older, so I did not appreciate it nearly as much as I would have if I had seen it as a child. But from this adult's perspective, it is every bit as good as LBT and AAT. Again, Bluth dives headfirst into tricky, difficult subject matter for kids (and adults alike!) but deals with it in a respectful and gentle way. He shows kids that loved ones do die, but they live on inside of us and help us throughout the remainder of our lives. Bluth is very mindful of our mortality and All Dogs Go To Heaven is perhaps his one movie that shows this side of him the most. I can't believe some parents think this movie is inappropriate for kids or that their kids "wouldn't get it" - is today's generation really that detached from reality?

5) Titan AE may be his most misunderstood film, from a critical standpoint at least. I thought it was wonderful, entertaining, visually breathtaking and overall decent, if not groundbreaking film story-wise. Here Bluth introduced a whole new kind of animation, propelled by computer effects and motion but still focused on hand drawn characters. I really like this combination and wish he had done more of it after this film. As a sci-fi film, Titan AE stands on its own. It's original, fun, and futuristic while not being too technical or geeky to get into. I really want to see it again, all this talk about Bluth has got me wanting to go back for more!

Unfortunately, I have to agree with the comment by avalenkov (Wed Jan 13 2010 18:57:21) regarding the rest of Bluth's work from the 90s onward:

"1. The Secret of N.I.M.H., An American Tail, The Land Before Time, All Dogs Go To Heaven, Titan A.E.

2. The rest are pure cr@p."

The Secret of NIMH. (9/10) So insanely hard not to give this a full 10, but Jeremy just takes the last thing away for me. The story though is fantastic, as is the animation and overall feel of the film.

The Land Before Time. (8/10) A very good film with an incredibly dark feel like SoN. Unfortunately for this, I felt it was too short and a little rushed. I would have liked it a tad longer.

An American Tail. (8/10) So sad. :( Has fine humor in it and does the depressing scenes wonderfully. But again the comic relief character Tiger? (Don't remember his name) detracted from the story.

It's been too many years since I last saw Anastasia and Thumbelina so it wouldn't be fair to rank them.

So am I ...
