Rank the Don Bluth movies you have seen from best to worst.

Rank the Don Bluth movies you have seen from best to worst, give a mark out of 10(if you have voted) and then write two or three sentences or so on why you like or hate the movie. I will give my verdicts.

1. THE SECRET OF NIMH-(10/10) I will confess I didn't see this until recently, and I loved it at first sight. I haven't read the book in its entirety, but I rarely judge a film by how unfaithful or faithful it is to the book. The animation is stunning, with excellent character animation. The music score by the wonderful Jerry Goldsmith is phenommonal, the song in the background of one scene was heart-rending. The voice-talents are spot on, especially the late Dom DeLuise and Derek Jacobi as Jeremy and Nicodemus. Jenner isn't the most sinister of all villains, but he is very convincing. I will say the sequel was completely unneccessary, its only redeeming quality being the voice cast, who had some pathetic dialogue to work with.

2. ANASTASIA-(9/10) I loved this film when I was 10, and now I am 17 and I still do. I got it on video 2 years ago, and all those wonderful memories came back. The animation is beautiful, and the songs are actually the film's main merit, Once Upon A December especially. The characters are engaging and funny, and the top notch voice talents from Christopher Lloyd, Kelsey Grammer, Meg Ryan and Angela Lansbury bring to life a beautiful, well-told story of the last Romanov princess. True, it is historically inaccurate, and obviously aimed at kids, butso was Pocahontas, and that was a beautiful film too.

3. AMERICAN TAIL-(9/10) For a long time, I thought this was the best Bluth movie, til I saw Secret of Nimh. The animation is stunning, very like the style of the Rescuers, and the songs especially Somewhere Out There were beautiful. The story, while slow at times, is genuinely poignant at times, and made me cry at times. The last time I cried in an animation was during Once Upon a Forest. Phillip Glasser was sweet as Fieval, but he does lack the singing ability, but as he was very young, it is forgiven. The other vocal talents were exceptional, as always the case with Bluth movies.

4. THE LAND BEFORE TIME-(9/10) This was a charming and often moving film of friendship and sometimes heartache. The animation was beautiful, and the music score by James Horner added to the emotion, that is lacking in the countless sequels. The vocal talents of the youngsters were a delight, especially Judith Barsi as Ducky, who was murdered not long after she voiced Anne Marie in All Dogs Go To Heaven. The shapteeth are a bit frightening for youngsters, and sometimes the story is a bit slow, but overall a beautiful film that is actually better than most of the 60s-80s Disney movies.

5. PEBBLE AND THE PENGUIN-(8/10) I don't get the low rating for this movie, as I honestly think it is one of the better Bluth movies. Sure it is flawed, almost all the movies I've reviewed are. The animation is mostly very good like in the killer whales scene, but in Drake's song there are a lot of colour changes, and Drake's animation was rather unimpressive. The songs, especially Now and Forever and Sometimes I Wonder were lovely, the only song I didn't like was Good Ship Misery, as all the vocalists did was shout, and it sounded horrible. The story is actually imaginative, though slow-moving at times. I don't get why people are so fussed about Rocko flying. Very few people have criticised Dumbo being able to fly, or that Beast turns into a human, not that either character need criticising. The voice talents were what made the movie, there were critical reviews(not on IMDB) that said the characterisations were racist, and they are not. James Belushi steals the show, Martin Short and Annie Golden are sweet, and Tim Curry(whose Drake sounded a lot like Jenner) sang magnificently in Don't Make Me Laugh. (it's the best I heard him sing since Blue Money)

6. ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN-(7/10) The main merit of this movie is the character of Anne Marie, she was really sweet and likeable. I thought the animation was excellent, and on the whole the voice talents were very good(Ken Page's King Gator was a hoot). Carface is a very convincing villain, and Vic Tayback's voice over was brilliant. However the story was clumsy and unfocused in the middle half, and there are some scenes like Charlie's dream and the ending(which was sad) that young children will find upsetting. I also didn't like the songs very much, they seemed bland and didn't seem to fit, and Dom DeLuise has done much better singing before, though the worst he's sang was in the otherwise hugely enjoyable Lion of Oz. The sequel wasn't terrible, but not actually true to the first film in terms of story and animation.

7. THUMBELINA-(7/10) A lot of people say it is worse than Pebble and the Penguin, but it is rated higher, which I still don't get. I don't think Thumbelina is that bad, but it is one of the weaker Bluth movies, though not the worst. The animation is nice in the song numbers, but sometimes especially in the latter half it is a bit lifeless. The songs are very pleasant, particularly Let Me Be Your Wings, but I have heard better in animations. Jodi Benson, who I have loved since Little Mermaid, is great as Thumbelina, and the other voices aren't bad either, eapecially Jaquimo. The story, while having some made up touches, remains true to the Hans Christian fairytale. In conclusion, a sweet, flawed but enjoyable film.

8. BARTOK THE MAGNIFICENT-(7/10) It is nowhwere near as good as Anastasia, but it is very entertaining. Bartok is annoying, and Ludmilla is a little over the top, but Kelsey Grammer was perfect in every way as Zozi. The animation wasn't bad, though in the scarier bits was a bit flat, and the songs, while tuneful, aren't particularly memorable. The voice talents are impeccable, namely Kelsey Grammer and Tim Curry as the charming and debonair large-headed skull.

9. TROLL IN CENTRAL PARK-(6/10)A very good voice cast and some nice music save an otherwise forgettable film. The animation is mostly unimpressive with very flat backgrounds, though in the musical numbers it actually wasn't too bad. The songs by Cynthia Weil while not memorable, are quite nice, likewise with the incidental music. Stanley is charming, but Gnorga is very frightening(though Cloris Leachman did a great job voicing her). Gus and Stanley didn't quite have the chemistry that they should have had. There were attempts at humour, but didn't quite deliver due to the lacklustre plot.

10. ROCK A DOODLE DOO-(6/10) This is definitely the weakest Bluth movie. I know I gave it the same score as Central Park, but I honestly didn't think the film was complete execrement. The animation was okay, but the live action bits were very jarring indeed. The songs were lacklustre,(the owl songs sounded the same all the time) and despite Phil Harris's excellent voicing, the story, which was very thin, was too heavily-reliant on the narration and got distracting. Edmund's speech impediment was annoying, but I didn't hate the character. The best character has to be the Grand Duke, voiced wonderfully by Christopher Plummer. I really wouldn't want to mess with him. There are some good lines, namely "if I kill my nephew would it be murder or charity" proving the Duke had the best lines. Not complete execrement, but could have been so much better.

I haven't seen Titan AE, but I will see it, after hearing good things about it.
Anyway, please feel free to post your thoughts, and if you want to contact me, email me at [email protected].

I'd have to watch them all to refresh myself, but Dogs really touched me as a child. And the land before time is just unforgettable, and nimh is a masterpiece.

In the end, Okonkwo threw the Cat.

1. THE LAND BEFORE TIME- This is my utmost favourite Don Bluth film bar none. I haven't seen it in so long but I can't recall the last time a movie has touched every one of my emotions so deeply, and made feel so connected to the characters as if I knew them so well.

2. THE SECRET OF NIMH- This movie is brilliant, not emotionally vibrant as The Land Before Time, but the concept of having a contrast depicting the two ultimate extremes of human nature (ironically depicting the more 'human' aspect as anthropomorphic rats), a concept not present in the original novel. However ultimately dissapointed by the magical deus ex machina at the end, which seems to appear for no reason at all except maybe that Don Bluth thought the story was too boring.

3. ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN- A wonderful tale concerning the nature of morality and a great movie for your kids if your dog has passed away recently, haha. Haven't seen this movie for a while and don't remember it too well.

4. TROLL IN CENTRAL PARK- I think this went straight to VHS, I saw it once, many years ago. I think it was one of the forerunners of those now trendy nature awareness morality films.

5. ANASTASIA- Haven't seen it for a while. But I remember being a bit dismayed when I heard it was coming up. What kind of kids tales could be made about this tragic end to the hopes of the white army? Of course there was never any grounding to the tales of Anastasia's survival. But I digress, I think it was poorly executed. The scene of the dancing phantoms was wonderfully made but it is out of sync of the rest of the movie as the sense of wonder and mystery is absolved cos WE know that she's Anastasia. And don't get me started on historical inaccuracy, cos I swore I wouldn't let this be an issue in my judgment of films.
But I think that is my biggest qualm about this. It just makes me angry about the ignorance of the very real tragedy behind this story. But I suppose that's my personal issue.

6. THUMBELINA- Ok. My second biggest problem with this movie? Poor animation. My main problem is quite simple. All the other movies on this list have good morals that you can take away and apply to real life.
Land Before Time- Friendship
Secret of NIMH- Perseverance
All Dogs go to Heaven- Self redemption and sacrifice.
Troll in Central Park- Look after nature.
Anastasia- Can't remember but I'm sure it's something.

What morals did Thumbelina have? If you're beautiful everything will work out, even if there's nothing else going for you. Let me make dot points of what annoys me so much abouth this movie.
* Jacomo, nuff said.
* She's been alive for what, a few days, and she's whingeing about never finding love when her elderly mother hasn't found it either.
* She's self centred.
* She's not willing to settle for anything less than a prince.
* She is naive and taken advantage of easily.

What a great example to set for young girls.

1) An American Tale - Fivel is and always will be my favorite animated character growing up. from when i was 7 years old and i even still have my original plush doll of him from 1986 and he's been with me through out all of my hard times in life and im 30.. so yea fivel and american tale is my favorite plus nothing beats a tale about a mouse that losses his family gains a bunch of new friends on his search to find his family in new york and dealing with tons of hard times in his search!!

2)The Secret of NIMH- just a masterful work of art and a brilliant tale survival and trying to protect ones family and finding out about a lost loved ones past

3)Titan A.E. - this is becouse its a space opera and i LOVE space operas!! boy is humanity's last hope feels betrayed and abandoned. works as space junker. finds out that his dad left him everything he'd need to restart humanity while being chased by evil aliens bent on destroying the rest of humanity and their human helpers

4)All Dogs Go To Heaven - another character i love is charley the german shepard who is killed but refuses to leave his friend alone in the world and in the process meets a little girl whos in trouble and he helps her get away and find a home for his best friend. and as someone else has said its a great film for anyone to watch to teach about the loss of a loved pet and loved one!!!

5)The Land Before time- the first adventure of little foot and his few friends trying to find their way in a huge world. all this before he makes his numerous other friends in the other what 10-12 movies...

6)Anastasia- brilliant animation and wonderful songs "once apon a memory" granted yes its total B.S. on historical accuracy but for a diffrent take on the tale and to give it sort of a happy ending its a great movie!!

7)Bartok The Magnificant- as i said above i love the characters hank azaria is FRACKING AWSOME!

Anastasia (10/10) - I love this movie. I love the amazing cast of Meg Ryan, John Cusak, Christopher Lloyd, Angela Lansbury, Hank Azaria, and Kelsey Grammer. This movie is wonderful and really shows how strong women can be. The songs are unforgettable. I know it's not historically accurate but most cartoons aren't and frankly, I'm glad it's not. Talk about a depressing movie.

The Secret of N.I.M.H. (10/10) - This movie is great. I loved Dom DeLuise and thought he was the greatest possible choice for the lovable and funny Jeremy. The magic in this film was great, something that was missing from the book.

Thumbelina (10/10) - I have always loved Thumbelina since I was a kid. I love that Jodi Benson does the voice, she's always been one of my favorites. I know that not a lot of people like this movie, but I don't care about the messages or any of that stuff. It's a wonderful fairy tale filled with love and great songs and hilarious villains (Tim Curry!).

The Land Before Time (10/10) - I love this series of movies (at least up until the 5th). I love the friendships that all the different dinosaurs share and they don't care about long-necks only hang out with long-necks. It has a really good message and the villain (Sharptooth) was very scary.

All Dogs go to Heaven (8/10) - Once again we have Dom DeLuise to brighten up the screen in this movie. If it wasn't for Itchy I wouldn't like this movie near as much as I do. I must confess, that I do like the sequel better. I think it has better songs, a better ending, and a better villain. Although the original is just fine.

Rock-a-Doodle (6/10) - As far as non-Disney movies goes this one isn't too bad. I do like the boy-turning-into-a-kitten idea. And Peepers was the best secondary character. The ending was a little off but the villains were great. Snipes and the Grand Duke were wonderful together.

An American Tail, Troll in Central and Pebbles the Penguin, I seen part of these when my sister was watching them and that was enough for me. I will never watch these movies. I can't explain why I can't get into these movies, especially since I hear that An American Tail is so great, but I can't.

I have never heard of Titan A.E. until today.

NIMH, An American Tail, and Land Before Time are still Bluth's tops in my book. I personally liked Rock-a-Doodle. Dogs was good but some of the songs were out of palce (I liked the Gator scene, tho). Pebble & Penguin and Thumbelina weren't terrible, but not great.

I HATED Bartok the Magnificent! Just a stupid, unnecessary prequel. The only good about that were Kelsey Grammer and Tim Curry's cameo.

It's been years since I last saw Anastasia and I don't remember much from it. I've seen only a little of A Troll in Central Park and have never seen Titan AE but I've been really aching to check it out.

Nobody counting Dragon's Lair or Space Ace? Beyond that, Secret of Nimh is one of the greatest films of all time, imo.
