Dragonslayer: BEST Dragon movie ever.

Dragonslayer is the best dragon movie ever made. Easily. No competition.

I would put Reign of Fire at a distant second. I would put 7th Voyage of Sinbad and Sleeping Beauty up there, but come on, their dragons were only shown for like 5 minutes.

Not a fan of Willow or Dragon Heart.

Anything else out there? Pete's Dragon? Shrek? heh heh . .

Here's hoping the new Hobbit film will become my NEW favorite dragon movie.

I agree. Most realistic dragon ever. The way they build up to it. Inhaling before it breathes fire, ect. Great!

I have to agree. I loved this movie. Gritty, well acted and witty. The dragon still is one of the best, digital or otherwise.

Timing in these things is everything. I watched Dragonslayer when I was in my mid-twenties shortly after it came out, and I loved it. I still think it is the second best dragon movie I've ever seen (in spite of McNichol, who I just can't ever forget is McNichol while I'm watching it). But when I was only about five or six, I saw Disney's Sleeping Beauty at our neighborhood theater. No movie scene has ever had a bigger impact on me than the two or three minutes after Maleficent metamorphosed into that black and purple dragon (well, maybe the flying monkeys). That was the coolest thing I had ever seen. I made my mother let me see it two or three more times that week before it closed its run (the theater was only about a quarter mile from our house). Nothing will ever top that one for me.

Best dragon movie. Ever. It really isn't close, Dragonheart is a nice film to show a 5 year old. Nice morals. Kept thinking the dragon was going to take "The-rapists for a thousand, Alex." For me the animated Hobbit is second to Dragonslayer.

For films with sorcery and dark ages moodiness I'd also like to nominate Excalibur. Probably one of the greatest casts ever assembled.

I have to agree. I appreciate ALL genre films, though the "cutsie" factor turns me off. I think Dragonslayer is unsurpassed. That is why, when my nephew asked me for some "Cool pictures of Dragons," for his new phone, I thought of none but Vermithrax. Where can i find some cool pix, that would lend themselves to cropping for use as wallpapers? I have looked, but can only find one, or two. Please help me. Thanks.

Dragonheart better than Dragonslayer? Come on guys.. how can a dragon movie that has the dragon as comic relief be better than one with the dragon as the villain?

Dragonslayer does have its problems .. Peter MacNicol, unbelievable "girl posing as boy"-thing, needless inclusion of Christian faith/symbols into what should've been a fantasy world.. but still: This is what a dragon-movie should be: Played straight, shot on location and infused with some real grit (for a PG-flick that is).

I wouldn't count out How To Train Your Dragon.

I know it was animated but flight of the dragons is pretty cool

The brief mention of Christianity did not bother me at all. I felt like the movie was set in a dark age, when such a dragon could have existed and not have been recorded. Early Christianity fits perfectly in this setting.

Is there even a dragon in Willow??

I understand issues one might have with Dragonheart but it's the only one who makes the dragon a character in the story. Dragonslayer is pretty good. Lots of issues as well but nothing is perfect.

I can't even understand how anyone would put such disaster as Reign of Fire in second place on any list, even a distant second. It was so stupid, I lost IQ points just watching it.

I have hopes for the Hobbit's second installment regarding dragons, but the first trailer was only half finished so it doesn't look good.

You posted this back in 2008. Has another dragon movie came out yet that beats Dragonslayer? I can't think of any.

I never would have guessed, when I first saw "Dragonslayer" at a movie theater in 1981, that it would hold up so well decades later.

We bought one of the early LaserDisc players shortly afterward, and this film was was among the first 12-inch discs we owned. Man, did we watch it a LOT--over and over again......almost as much as our first "Star Wars" LaserDisc.

All in all, an unusual and compelling film, wholly deserving of its cult status. And yes, I think it probably IS the best dragon movie, period.
