50 cents for a coke is a lot?
The guy was complaining that a bottle of coca-cola cost 50 cents which was a lot for him. How much was it supposed to be? 40 cents?

shareWhen I was in school in the 1980s, cans of soda were less than 50 cents, and that was several years after the movie!
shareI like the scenes in Moneyball where they say the club asks the players to put money in a pop machine to get a soda. These guys make a lot of $$ but they expect to get free soda from the club. So what happens? They get free soda on some other team's dime.
shareIt's called inflation. It's pretty well known.
If you had watched a movie from the 40s a coke might have cost 5-10 cents.
Since there was no actual soda machine, it's likely that Lou (the concession owner) bought the Coke through the club wholesale and sold it to the caddies for a small margin as a "perk", so the Coke was likely even cheaper at the caddyshack than it was at a local store or even at the snack bar.
shareAs a kid I remember most coke machines had coke and other sodas for 25 cents. 50 cents was a lot for coke at that time. It was probably due to the fact that the machine was on the fancy golf course.

says 50c in 1980 is $1.59 in 2021
so how much is coke these days?
Where I work and live in Illinois it's over $2 for a bottle of soda because of the raise of minimum wage. Heck one regular candy bar has the price of $1.20 and you have to pay .20 worth of tax on it. Most of the time they have only a buy 2 get one free deal on those candy bars. And if they are on sale it's 89 cents. But with tax that's $1.09. I hate today's world!
shareEveryone seems to forget what Danny said. "Yeah well Lou raised the price of Coke. He's been losing at the track." It wasn't market or manufacturing inflation. It was Lou skimming money and needed a way to repay it so he didn't get in trouble.
