Comedian Patton Oswalt lays out the reasons why 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture is actually a terrible science fiction movie.

Well, I disagree with him. They were going for a more cerebral, non-Star Wars film, and they mostly succeeded. It's not a perfect Star Trek movie by any means, but it's a lot better than popular opinion would have it, I think.

reply

Yep, its more science fictiony than the following movies.

Agree. A very serious film. I just wish they had put the same effort into a different script. They basically rewrote The Changeling.

I think the biggest problem for me was that the first 10 minutes was as thrilling and astounding as any of the great action/adventure films ever, then slowed to a serious sci-fi film.

reply

I disagree as well.

It's a thoughtful meditation on the evolution of life and humanity's place in the cosmos. It examines the creator/created dynamics of mythology.

I haven't seen Star Trek V (its reputation proceeds it) but it suddenly occurs to me that the premise of V is an inversion of TMP, isn't it?

reply

Nothing to see here: yet another ADHD whiner complaining that TMP is boring and no fun and TWoK is exciting and fun.

How many more times will this tired argument be brought out? Forever and for all time, TMP (while not perfect) is the far superior movie.

reply

Oswalt is a loser.
