Oh my, what a laughable and childish statement. "I will not watch any film that won an Oscar!" "This film was made just to win awards!" I'm not sure if time has been as kind to "Kramer vs. Kramer," as opposed to say, I don't know "Apocalypse Now" or "Raging Bull." This was, however, one of the first major Hollywood films to deal with what was the growing cultural phenomenon of divorce, something far more commonplace today. There are also shades of women's liberation as Meryl Streep's character is unhappy with the life of a housewife, leaving Hoffman's cramped apartment nest to attempt to forge her own individual identity. This was also a growing phenomenon in the late 1970s.
This is a gentle film, quiet, subtle with terrific emotional truth. It was, and still is, a respectable work detailing human lives suffering from conflicts of the modern world of 1979. Streep's performance is a marvel, not to mention the wonderful chemistry of Hoffman and Henry. This movie took on some cultural issues of the time that today seem passe, but the issues of the corporate world Hoffman deals with are still relevant 31 years later.
As for refusing to watch any Best Picture Oscar winner, are you truly sure you would rather skip "Casablanca," "All About Eve," "On the Waterfront," "Lawrence of Arabia," "Midnight Cowboy," "The Godfather," "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," "The Deer Hunter," "Platoon," "Silence of the Lambs," "Unforgiven," "Shakespeare in Love" and "No Country for Old Men?" And that's just worthy films that won Best Picture.....What about Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Cinemtography and Best Foreign Film? Don't sell yourself short. You'll miss out on some truly great films.
