What’s the appeal of this? What makes it so special?

Watching it now, it’s certainly not the storyline, which besides from the twist of Sandy attending the school, is very weak.

I’d say it’s the songs and characters, plus 50s nostalgia.

What do you think it is?

Oh and Travolta is no doubt a superstar in this movie.

It's magic!

I didn't like the movie the first time I saw it, but then, I was a teenager and couldn't get over the fact that the actors were "so OLLLLLD".

Now I like it. I don't love or adore it, but I really like it. Great songs that you can listen to over and over, universal theme of the difficulties romantic relationships, and I can watch the dance contest scene a million times and not get tired of it. It's so fantastically sexy and bursting with hormone-fueled energy, even if everyone involved is pushing thirty, I think it's the best teen dance scene in a major film. IMHO having just one or two great scenes can bump a movie up from "okay" to "good", even if it's never going to be great.

The songs!!!

Big Travolta fan (but can't stand this movie)

I'd guess it was a combo of both lead actors, nostalgia (likely heightened by Elvis' passing, the year prior?)

It's true, some of the script are dumb, but there's magic to it.
The story about summer love appeal to us - whether we have experienced such love and especially if not. Moreover there's great chemistry between two main characters, you don't seen it in any move.

But for me it's the energy, the dancing and the songs. I can't think of any musical with at least two hits songs that combines so perfectly between dance and song.

Olivia Newton-John in tight black leather. She was also hot as the uptight little school girl. I wish more women had her aura these days.

It's whimsical and escapist entertainment. A throwback to a much simpler time.

reply

Actually, some of the themes are anything but whimsical and escapist.
Like that Rizzo had a pregnancy scare, and that Sandy had to change herself completely to please the others.

Sure, it is light-hearted enough anyway compared to many intentionally gritty movies out there.
But it's not as saccharine and unrealistic as some people think.

Yes those parts of the story are there but I still think fans of Grease will say they like it for the reasons I listed.

reply

Yeah, I don't get Furienna's comment... those are reasons people complain about Greece because they're stuck in today's world. Greece is great escapism entertainment and if you watch it trying to escape it certainly does the job.
