I'd really like to know what is so good about Meryl Streep

I didn't find her to be that great in this. There were moments where she appeared to be trying too hard. Or maybe it's just me who is becoming more and more difficult to please. Walken thoroughly deserved his Oscar, and De Niro deserved his nomination, but Streep's character could have been played by anyone and the actress still would have got an Oscar nomination.

I agree. I have always thought streep plays every character the same way. Her role as Kramer's wife in Kramer vs. Kramer was no different than her role in this film. exact same mannerisms, speech patterns, and the uncertainty in her voice. Never have liked her.

I thought she did a great job with the role. I saw this movie when it first came out and Meryl Streep was different - her face wasn't the classic beauty but angular and interesting. Her acting style was very natural and realistic. She was stand-out for a relatively unknown actress.

Streep is on record as saying she felt the character of Linda as it was written in the script had no depth and had no interest in the part. She only took it so she can be with John Cazale who was approaching the terminal stages of cancer during the filming.

I knew she was engaged to Cazale, but didn't know the part about her disinterest in the role of Linda. That's very interesting. Thanks.

' Her acting style was very natural and realistic.'

that's very exactly what she does not excel at. Geez.

Now we longer call it acting, but "acting-style" also. Yes the style is to be an excellent actor, and to not look conscious of a camera being on you. If people think she's very natural, no wonder they like her
..and all this time I thought it was Dyan Cannon

I think he's talking about her acting IN THIS MOVIE, since this is a message board for THE DEER HUNTER. I would agree with somebody who felt her acting was not natural in, say, "Sophie's Choice", but not here. I bet you haven't even seen this movie, have you? And of course, you would never feel the need to watch it because you go into every one of these discussion with the assumption that you are ALREADY the one who is right, because you never actually hear what somebody else has to say, as the only person you keep counsel with is yourself. That could be said about many of her roles (but not anyone), which she obtains due to being Streep.

Except that in 1978, Meryl Streep was a complete unknown. It was largely due to her excellent performance in The Deer Hunter which led to her getting the best roles soon after. It wasn't until 1981 where she landed the cover role on Time magazine, touting her as "America's Best Actress" and it wasn't until a year after that when she gave her most flamboyantly effective performance in "Sophie's Choice" (though almost a parody of the sweetness and vulnerability she showed in The Deer Hunter. Obviously, Meryl is a person who learns the rules of the game very quickly. Smart girl. That Meryl.) that her status became sealed.

So, it all began for her with The Deer Hunter, which as you now know is the best performance Meryl Streep has ever given. And also one of the best female and best feminine performances ever given.

Perhaps Duke would have been better Mr. H.

Streep was in a relationship with Cazale at the time of filming, who was very ill with cancer. When the producers found out, they wanted him replaced. Streep was also going to leave the production as well. Even though she was a newbie at the time, the quality of her performance must have allowed her some respect and pull, in order to call some shots here. If anyone could have done the role, or was as suitable, she would have been replaced.

Actually, you kind of hit the nail on the head, perhaps without knowing it. Her character is sweet and very eager to please and people like her often try too hard. Streep never touched me so much.
