For me it's the one when Elaine and Alex go on a whirlwind trip of the world. WTF were the writers thinking? It's like they had run out of ideas. First of all, how are we supposed to believe that Alex and Elaine can afford that. Elaine has to work two jobs to make ends meet and are there cabbies that make enough for such a vacation? And then it's implied that Elaine leads on Alex to have sex with him? I don't like that at all.
Hmmmm there a few duds on the show worth mentioning. I agree with the Europe episode and would add....
Simka and her green card
Tony's father
Elaine dating the dude who took a vow of silence
Elaine dating Jeffrey Tambor
Elaine dating Wallace SHAWN
Alex and the dog
Tony adopting the kid who we never end up seeing again
Episodes dealing with Latka and his multiple personality disorder
I rather liked that episode. As far as being able to afford the trip, well, it's magical TV sit-com money we're talking about anyway. But even in reality there are times when airfares allow a bargain trip to Europe. Beyond that, we see that Alex has money problems by the end of the trip and Elaine probably hasn't spent a dime thanks to all of her suitors.
So, off the top of my head, the stinkers would be the one where Elaine is dating a guy who has taken a vow of silence, and pretty much any episode centered around Simka (can't remember how many that would be). There was also an Elaine centered episode (I think in season 1) where she was having a breakdown, I think that one was bad, but I'd have to re-watch.
The worst would be the one with Tony and his father. That one really stunk up the place.
Yes, that one was bad. It had nothing to do with Taxi.
And even though Tony is so cute and funny in his clueless way, I often skip over the scenes in episodes when he's in the ring. I love Tony, hate boxing. I appreciate the athleticism involved. But I cannot fathom why anybody would step into a ring voluntarily to get punched in the face. When any movie or TV show has a boxing scene, I hit the fast forward button.
I don't think the episode with Paul Sand as the agoraphobic artist is funny. I liked the actor. I thought he had an adorable sweetness. But some of the episodes that feature Elaine are hit or miss. She's funnier as a supporting character or fending off the advances of lecherous Louie.
...just watched one last night that's unusual for Taxi- it's not funny and has continuity errors.
It's "Bobby's Roommate". Elaine's building is going condo and she can't afford to buy her apartment. Bobby offers her his place to stay for a month because he's going on the road with an acting job. Unfortunately he returns in a week and Tony and Alex have major worries about their co-workers being "roomies".
Alex and Tony go overboard with some decidely unfunny stuff. They want to guard Elaine's virtue as if she's their teen-age sister. Very dull writing for Taxi. They only funny moment is when Elaine is scanning the classifieds and they tell Jim that she lost her apartment.
Jim replies that he "loses" his apartment frequently and sometimes it takes him days to find it!
And where the heck are Elaine's children? There's no mention of them! Would Elaine farm them out to relatives for a month? If so, wouldn't the relatives offer her a place to stay too?
I thought about the ex-husband. But from what I could gather from the way Elaine spoke, he didn't seem to be in the picture. What I mean is he didn't seem to live nearby.
In the first season when she has to visit a sick relative, Jason stays with some of the guys in the garage. He has a big spelling bee and can't go with his mom.
In a number of episodes Elaine begs Tony, Bobby or Alex to babysit when she has a big date. And there are times when she's speaking with her babysitter on the phone. Her ex didn't seem available for child care. She obviously had sole custody.
Of course he might have taken them if Elaine really needed the help. But I found it odd in the episode that there was no mention of them. Not even something like, "I really miss my kids".
