It'd be really hard for the next Bakshi to get funding, yeah.
Animation used to be a place for the counter-cultures, the iconoclasts, the irreverent, the crazy, and the truly bizarre to find a foothold. It was subversive and experimental - and yeah, I'm even talking about Disney who at first gave us a musical-visual feast like Fantasia and a film that was about the life cycle in a forest as much as the cute deer hero.
When they started to care more about filling out every character in every cast with a-list stars, that was when animation really took a dive. They all look the same, frankly, (it's not just that it's CGI, either - unique, cool things can be done with CGI), and they hire voices based on popularity not based on merit.
