Did Obi-Wan know?

This probably has been asked a billion times, yet I couldn't find anything on that topic.

When they negotiate the price to go to Alderaan with Han, Obi-Wan is pretty fast at offering Han a very much higher price than requested (17000 instead of 10000 which already was considered extremely high by Skywalker), but would pay 12000 on arrival at Alderaan.

Did Obi-Wan know that Alderaan would be destroyed? If so, why is he surprised when it actually happens and most important why doesn't he warn the people of Alderaan? At the negotiation he seems pretty sure about what he is doing.

reply

He did not know it would be destroyed. What makes you think he knew?

reply

He didn't know. Obi-Wan didn't have 10,000 on him at the time. They sold Luke's speeder for the initial 2,000. He was counting on the alliance to make up the difference when they reached Alderaan.

reply

i cant remember how they found out Leia was imprisoned. (wait , now i can , later on after they too were captured)
Didnt the message just say "Get these plans to Alderaan" ?

in which case Ben could roll up at the council and say "Jedi here with important news , also, can you get the taxi fee please"
so he didnt have to rely on Alderaan being destroyed to avoid the bill - which probably wouldnt work for a merc like Han anyway.

[edit]
in addition to that Alderaan hadnt been destroyed at that point

reply

They discovered Leia was on the Death Star after they were on it. R2 discovered it by accident when he was accessing the computer banks.

reply

There was no indication that he knew. Not sure why you would think so. If it was the 17,000, Obi-Wan offered that much because he knew his royal friends on Alderaan could easily afford it.

reply

Thanks everyone for the replies so far; maybe I should be a little more specific.

Why do I believe Obi-Wan could have known about the about-to-come destruction of Alderaan:

Han Solo asks for 10k, all in advance.

Luke points out that’s way to much.

Obi-Wan then offers Han Solo 2k on departure and another 15k on arrival at Alderaan.

Making it 17k in total which must be an obscene amount of money (if 10k already is considered a rip-off).

Now paying him 2k in advance and Alderaan being destroyed bevore arrival (so not having to pay the 15 remaining k) would be sort of convenient on one hand and giving the audience a hint that Obi-Wan has future-predicting abilities on the other hand.

Unfortunately I (I don’t know about anyone else) never get to know how much money Luke or Obi are carrying with them and I also don’t get to know how much money the speeder deal made them (doesn’t realy matter because the speeder is sold AFTER negotiating the price with Han).

Even though that doesn’t convince me I guess I’m just going to have to take that they were on a limited budget to pay in advance.

First, we only know Luke thinks it's a ripoff. We don't know what Obi-Wan thinks. Obi-Wan is, likely, buying loyalty off of Han, who will now do some daringly stupid things to save his passengers because he's getting a huge reward.

Second, I don't think Obi-Wan was trying to get out of paying the 15,000 because Leia tells Han he'll get his money, and then later we see him loading up boxes onto the Falcon. This is, presumably, the payment. So he got the money.

Third, what would be the benefit of lying about the money? Obi-Wan pays Han 2,000, then they go to a planet that is destroyed? Why? To get on-board the Death Star? But they didn't do anything to Death Star. To get Princess Leia out, maybe, but Obi-Wan just goes to shut off the tractor beam - he doesn't know anything about Leia being on the Death Star, so that's not it.

That's the biggest point, too, because if there's no reason to lie, no reason to go to a blown-up planet, and no reason to infiltrate the Death Star, Obi-Wan wouldn't know.

Look at it another way: if Obi-Wan knew Alderaan would blow up, what would he have done with that information? Tried to warn a planet full of people about their imminent doom, OR he would have made straight for a Rebel base (or sympathetic world) which would have helped to destroy the Death Star. He would not have headed for the stardust that was once Alderaan. Right? Absent of a logical character motivation, I'd say he didn't know.

Every action Obi-Wan takes is that of someone who did not know Alderaan would be destroyed.

A question: what makes you think he does know? Does he say or do anything that seems to suggest he knows Alderaan is toast?

" I guess I’m just going to have to take that they were on a limited budget to pay in advance."
that is exactly correct.
Also read AceOfSpades makes some excellent points.
Also:
"Alderaan being destroyed bevore arrival (so not having to pay the 15 remaining k) "
WHAT?
you think Han will let them off paying just because the destination is rubble?

He was desperate (just like Han suspected). He NEEDED to get to Alderann, and the Empire was trying to find them. He had to get out of there, fast, and promising Han more than was requested was a sure fire way to get out of there fast.
