Do the effects still hold up?
I haven't seen this movie in eons, like 30 years or more. I'm going to try get it n dvd. I'm just wondering how well do the effects hold up in this day and age?

shareThis should compare to Alien and Star Wars.
Should.
It does not.
The effects are horrible. It looks like something right out of the late 50's or early 60's; it is so painful to watch, that it almost ruin the film for me.
The effects were dated after Star Wars.

it looked like the inside of the city scenes were filmed in a shopping centre, by the look of the escalators.
shareThe main issue, to me, is that they used a moving camera to shoot the miniatures. That emphasized that they were miniatures. It would have probably been better to just use a static camera, or use simple pans, etc.
Also, they should have used texturing on the buildings and the transport tubes so they didn't look as shiny, which again emphasized that they were models.
The matte paintings were fine, however.
I love reading these threads from years ago and seeing a post from just last week :)
Anyway, you’re certainly correct about the miniatures. To add to your points, the other unfortunate decisions (or constraints) were the shallow focus and the use of water to add lakes in the city. There was no way you could make water look convincing.
Very good point! I was going to add that. Yes, the still water was certainly a mistake. It would have been better to add something to thicken the water. Or, just use molded plastic instead of water.
shareWith movies like this you just have to go with it. It never bothers me to watch these old movies and their limited effects. I guess people who were around then can adjust to the crude effects of the 70's. Even today, as good as the effects are, they sometimes look very cartoonish and out of place in the story, but I still just accept it all. A little imagination mixed in goes a long way.

False.

The effects in KK76 look a lot better than the '05 version which looks like it was made in the 90's.

Oh man, the ice robot guy was soooo bad, that was the absolute worst thing in this movie to me, it looked like they just stuck a bunch of mirrors and ductwork to a guy riding a vacuum cleaner. I still love the movie though.
shareYep. Compare Ice Robot with the droids in Star Wars a year later. Utterly ridiculous. Imagine an evil C3P0 in the ice cave instead, rather than dryer duct robot.
shareNope it looks like a high school play and I don't think the effects were all that great when it came out either.
shareThis came out a year before SW, but at the time the effects really weren't bad compared to other films out at the time.
Star Wars was such an incredible leap visually, it made everything that went before look crude, including Logan's Run.
It's hard to believe this was made shortly before Star Wars.
Really makes you appreciate how impressive SW was at the time.
