I love this movie but one scene that didn't sit well with me was when Buttermaker (Matthau) tells off Amanda (O'Neil) that he didn't want her or her mother's company is very hurtful to a person let alone a child. I think he throws a beer at her tells her off. Other than that it's great.
shareI understand why he did it at the time. Of course it was a terrible thing to do to Amanda. He knew there was no getting back together and didn’t want Amanda to get her hopes up about it. He figured if he was nasty to her she would drop it.
shareButtermaker did the right thing, he showed Amanda how ugly his alcoholism was and he didn't want her to be like him at all. It was very effective tough love.
shareUse a bit of empathy from Buttermaker's point of view and you'll understand why that scene is uglier than you even imagine now. Sometimes that's how it has to be.

I do get why he did what he did but the one thing that does stop this film being a 10/10 and does always bother me is that we never get an apology.
In a way it's fitting for the tone of the film it's not sappy in the slightest but after that and seeing her heartbroken i always want more than 1 line of showing her how to bat next season
It was a tough, powerful scene.
