I was disappointed.

I'll admit that this film was ahead of its time, but I thought it was boring. It's also deeply flawed because it boasts 24 lead characters and none of them are particularly interesting. The problem with having such a large ensemble cast is that I didn't feel like I knew any of these characters. We ultimately got to see glimpses of their existence, but in the end they feel 2D because of that. I think a film like Magnolia does a much better job because those characters felt fully realized. Altman unwisely chose to include a lot of music in this film when he would have been better off reducing it by about 30 minutes and spending that time on character development.

I was very disappointed also as I expected an all-time great movie by the hype and way people have talked about this film.

Instead, it was an interesting idea that had some good parts and some weak parts. I didn't find any performances overwhelmingly great.

So the end result is a movie worth watching, but far from something deserving of a top all-time movie status

ditto Monsterflicks comment on both counts. Favorite movie and watch it every August to commemorate the first time I saw it in a theater in 1975 on a hot summer day in Seattle.

Ah, the beauty of seeing a film without knowing all the hype behind it. After I kept catching it at different points on Cinemax, today I finally decided to see what it was about. And I'm glad I did.

I wasn't bored by it, quite the opposite. For a film that doesn't focus on any particular character too closely, I knew exactly who these people were and I was interested in their stories. I liked that we were observing them kind of from a far, and there wasn't the usual intimate examination of their actions, or evens in general. I felt there was a lot of subtlety in the film as well. It's like a tapestry or a mural. You can come close to inspect the individual elements, but it's how they come together to form the whole picture, where the interesting part is.

Now, I'm probably missing some of the cultural aspects behind it and I lack an in depth knowledge of US politics at that time, so I can't speak much on that. But just from the way everything was presented, it was an excellent film. And one I enjoyed a lot.

Yeah, it was enjoyable. I saw it for the first time a couple years ago. Never really heard about it before then. 3 Women is another great Altman film from around the same time period. Totally different but really good. Check it out if you haven't already.

I haven't seen 3 Women, so I'll add it to my watchlist. Thanks for the recommendation!
