I was disappointed.

I'll admit that this film was ahead of its time, but I thought it was boring. It's also deeply flawed because it boasts 24 lead characters and none of them are particularly interesting. The problem with having such a large ensemble cast is that I didn't feel like I knew any of these characters. We ultimately got to see glimpses of their existence, but in the end they feel 2D because of that. I think a film like Magnolia does a much better job because those characters felt fully realized. Altman unwisely chose to include a lot of music in this film when he would have been better off reducing it by about 30 minutes and spending that time on character development.

Most Altman films feel this way, except for Gosford Park which was my favorite Altman film. Short Cuts felt the same way and so did Nashville, Mash, A Prarie Home Companion, and just a lot of other films.

Nashville and Magnolia are two very different films - the former is more about a particular place and its culture at a particular time (hence the great amount of country music) while in the latter, the connecting tissue between the numerous characters´ is not so much the place but rather the problems they face - the most prominent of which, of course, are the various forms of child abuse and its consequences. And besides, the characters in Nashville are remarkably well fleshed out considering the very limited amount of screen time they get.

I found most of the characters interesting eventually but I was left feeling like I didn't get to know any of them very well. I just watched it for the first time and I feel like if I watch it again I'd notice more and eventually get to know the characters and that could make all the difference. I don't know. I did like it just didn't love it.

Agree. I feel sad for wasting 3 hours on this movie. It wasn't worth it. And after "MASH" and "Nashville" I don't know if I should even watch "The Player".

yeah, these movies with a big cast don't do it for me really, never seen a movie in that "genre" that i really liked

I think it takes repeated viewings to really "get" this film. There's just SO much going on and SO many characters to follow. Personally, I think it's the greatest American film ever made. I watch it at least once or twice a year, ever since I first saw it in 1975!
