best performance by an actor not to win the Oscar

I consider Pacino's performance in this to be one of the greatest performances not to win the Oscar. Unfortunately he had the bad luck of doing this the same year that One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest won everything (and Jack did deserve it). Anybody agree?

This post is so old! But I was 20 years old at the time of the Oscars for this year. Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino were the front runners, and it was going to be one or the other.

Back in the day, Al sort of didn't care about the Oscar, in that year. Jack wanted it badly. I think their performances were neck and neck, both extremely strong, career highs, obvious even at that time.

So what tipped the scales was that Jack wanted it more than Al.

I was there.

The Godfather
Serpico
The Godfather: Part II
Dog Day Afternoon
...And Justice for All.
Scarface
Glengarry Glen Ross
Carlito's Way
Heat
Donnie Brasco

Pacino should have won for all of these imo.

You are very biased, Pacino only deserved it For Dog Day Afternoon, Godfather 1 and 2, And maybe Serpico.

The all time greatest Oscar snub belongs to Robert Shaw who, while NOT being nominated, should've won Best Supporting Actor for Jaws - his competition that year:
WINNER
The Sunshine Boys: George Burns
NOMINEES
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: Brad Dourif
The Day of the Locust: Burgess Meredith
Dog Day Afternoon: Chris Sarandon
Shampoo: Jack Warden

No eternal reward will forgive us now for wasting the dawn ..... JM

It is good to see this thread that I started over 10 years ago still going strong. I just saw Dog Day Afternoon recently and still declare that Pacino's performance is one of a kind and would have easily won the Oscar any other year. He performance is as complex and layered as could be. I will also say that Chris Sarandon deserved his nomination. He is amazing in his two scenes.
