Who would you cast in a re-make?
I was thinking about it and I'm not really sure who would be good for both Paul and Jean.

Justin Beaver as Paul and Miley as Jeanne.
shareDaniel Day-Lewis/Lea Seydoux or Ralph Fiennes/Adele Exarchopoulos
shareAdele Exarchopolous would be great as "Jeanne" (the butter is warming up in my mind). I don't know who could play "Paul" though. It's not really a Daniel Day-Lewis role. Maybe James Franco, but he is too young and perhaps not a strong enough actor. Johnny Depp has a lot of personal experience with younger and/or French women.
It won't happen because you just couldn't replace Brando, but Adele would actually be much BETTER than Maria Schneider in the female role.
I'm not a fan of remakes; rather a concept needs to be rethought and a new direction can accommodate an entirely different sort of cast. In this case, I recently watched a Gay Porn version made as an experimental film in 1974 called "Adam & Yves", which uses the "strangers in an apartment" motif as its jumping off point, both roles taken by males.
When Bertolucci first announced this project following "The Conformist", his first choices for the roles were an encore from that film: Jean-Louis Trintignant and Dominique Sanda. Obviously he changed the script's arc, making the hero American in ultimately coming up with the Brando version we all know. But that indicates the flexibility one has to envision.
During this same time period, my favorite director Ken Russell was planning his film "Savage Messiah" on the British sculptor, as an older woman/young man relationship and announced John McEnery as Henri Gaudier-Brzeska and Jean Moreau as his friend. He ultimately went the unknown route for the younger character with Scott Antony (who I thought did a great job) and cast my favorite British actress Dorothy Tutin (RIP) in the Moreau role, giving the great stage actress Tutin her best movie role of her career. Quite a different cast. Tutin unfortunately is not famous to film buffs probably because she never "went Hollywood", staying in England for her entire career in plays, film and TV.
Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen. I'm sure Lohan would take a stick of butter up her butt for 75 bucks...and Charlie Sheen; well, you know..I suspect he would be okay with it too.
