Favorite scene or joke?

I just watched What's Up Do? last night for the first time in many, many years.

My favorite scene is definitely the courtroom scene. The performances and dialogue is so funny!

What is your favorite scene or bit?

reply

I love the scene at the reception where Judy pretends to be Eunice and charms everyone and pretty much gets Howard the grant. I also love the scene where Howard finds Judy in his bathtub and the chase is amazing...probably one of the top five chase scenes in cinema history.

reply

Judy: Steve you didn't tell me you were getting married
eunice: Yes in three weeks
Judy: condolences
Eunice: WHo is this person!?
Howard: Don't pay any attention to her she was behind a rock in the drugstore.

Howard: How am I going to explain anything to Eunice
Judy: That is the easiest thing! Now she will have been crying so her eyes will be all puffy and her nose running but YOU overlook that. You look into those red puffy swollen eyes and you say 'Eunice there's been a terrible misunderstanding! I've behaved like a Cad, a Bounder! But now I see everything clearly now... Judy and I are going to put you into a home.
Howard: That is not amusing!

Howard: You!! You you you
Judy: niss Howard. Eunice. We've almost got that stammer cured, sit down dear.
Howard: But how, how, how-
Judy: Howard! Howard. He keeps getting stuck on names, it must be the pleasure of meeting you for the first time I must say I can feel it myself.

Thanks for posting those scenes...I started laughing just reading them again.

This was on HBO last night. So glad I stayed up!

My fave was when the hotel detective used his "charm" to delay Mrs. Van Hoskins.

I sing and dance around the house in my underwear. Doesn't make me Madonna. Never will.

reply

Too many to list, but I can think of a couple:

Bailiff: They all drove into San Francisco Bay...
Judge: That's illegal use of public waterways.
Bailiff: In stolen cars...
Judge: That's grand theft.
Frederick Larrabee: And they broke into my house!
Judge: That's breaking and entering.
Defendant (pointing to Eunice): And she was brought against her will...
Judge: That's kidnapping.
Eunice: And these men tried to molest me!
Judge (looks at Eunice): That's unbelievable...

Maitre d' to Waiter: What kind of wine are you serving at table one?
Shot of everyone with heads under table.

Howard: You're very different.
Judy: I know I'm different, but from now on I'm going to try and be the same.
Howard: The same as what?
Judy: The same as people who aren't different.

Howard: I'm sorry for all those things I said.
Judy batting eyelashes: Love means never having to say you're sorry.
Howard stares blankly.
Judy stares with frozen smile.

I love that last scene the most. I always hated that line from Love Story. It never made sense to me.
Howard: That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
Judy: I know.

I wish Cotton was a monkey, I wish Cotton was a monkey...

The one that absolutely SLAYS me every time hasn't been mentioned by anyone yet (surprisingly), It goes something like this:-

Eunice (answering the door to Howard in her dressing gown):- You like very nice, Howard.

Howard: Thank you. So do you, Eunice.

Eunice: Well I haven't gotten dressed yet, Howard.

Same goes for the scene with Judy impersonating an invented secretary Sylvia-Louise informing Eunice by phone of the supposed change of venue. "You got a pencil, darling?"

Classic!

The Judge (Judy's Pop?)Is hilarious when he's talking to the clerk of the court about the evenings session & then when he's describing his routine for taking his pills, do you know what this red pill is for? No it's to remind me to take the blue pill?? a brilliant movie where the action doesn't let up for a second. It's up there with Midnight Run, Just Friends & Bringing Up Baby

reply

"You? You?"
"Eunice!"
"How? How?"
"Howard. He still gets stuck on names. It must be the excietment of meeting you for the first time."

Everyone I know who likes this movie knows every single line from it. It's that good. There are so many brilliant, funny lines in it that it's easier just to retain the whole thing.

Judge Maxwell: You see this yellow pill?
Bailiff: Yes sir.
Judge Maxwell: You know what it's for?
Bailiff: What, Judge?
Judge Maxwell: To remind me to take this BLUE pill!
Bailiff: What's the blue one for, Judge?
Judge Maxwell: I don't know. They're afraid to tell me.

Cabbie to Eunice at the wharf drop-off: You didn't want me to wait did ya?
Eunice: Actually, I would.
Cabbie: I didn't think so. (peels away, tires screaming)

"Charles, what kind of wine are you serving at Table 1?"

reply

In the courtroom
guy on the bike: I want my bike back!
Judge: I'll give you your bike back, I'll give you a broken back if you don't be quiet!

Eunice: They tried to molest me.
Judge: That's.... unbelievable.

Mr. Laraby: How dare you touch that brave unbalanced woman!

Judy: did anyone ever tell you you are very very sexy?
Hugh: Well actually no.
Judy: They never will.

reply

I recently purchased this DVD and I haven't stopped playing it yet. I'm so impressed with the quick fire rat-a-tat-tat speed of the dialogue and sight gags. So much of it works even with all the little cameos. The taxi driver at the beginning.

Howard:No, my igneous rocks; I hope they're not broken!

Cabbie:'I know how you feel, Mister. I hate it when my igneous rocks are even touched!'

Yes, this film harks back to the golden age of screwball comedy but I'm still impressed with the level of suggestion and the 'U certificate' that the film has got.

Judy: He still gets stuck on names. It's probably the excitement...
...of meeting you for the first time. I must say I can feel it myself.

Frederick Larrabee: Can you?

Judy: Can I? My heart is going a mile a minute.
Why, you can just feel it pounding. Can't you feel it? (She holds his hand to her left breast)

Frederick Larrabee: Yes, I think I can. Yes, it's absolutely...
It's certainly in there pounding.
It's amazing, you should feel it, gentlemen. ( They all rise together and quickly)
Sit down, gentlemen.

...and the hotel manager. Oh god that was so funny...

Howard: Good morning.
Mr Kaltenborn: No, I don't think so. I'm Mr Kaltenborn, the manager of what's left of the hotel.

Toby. Toby! I got me a regular Ben-Hur down here. Doing 95... minimum

"What is your favorite scene or bit?"

Upon meeting Madelline Kahn's character, Judy says:

"That's a person named Eunice?"

reply

I like the scene when Judy first meets Howard in the drug store and she's flirting with him! *lol*
Judy: "What's up doc?"
Howard:"I beg you pardon?"
Judy:"We gotta stop meetin' like this."

My other favorite scene is when Howard finds Judy in his bathtub
"Judy: [calling from the bathroom] Hello out there.
Howard: [responding automatically] Hello.
[mutters to himself]
Judy: [calling from the bathroom] What?
[Howard runs to the bathroom and drops his pyjama trousers, Judy's taking a big bubble bath]
Judy: I believe you dropped something.
Howard: What do you think you are doing?
Judy: I think I'm taking a bath aren't I?
Howard: If you're not out of here in two minutes, I'm calling the police.
Judy: Who do you think they'll arrest? The girl in the tub or the guy with his pants down?
Howard: I am not joking now. I do not like to act rashly, but you are the last straw that breaks my camel's back, you are the plague, you bring havoc and chaos to everyone, but why to me? Why me? Why?
Judy: Because you look cute in your pyjamas, Steve.
Howard: GET OUT!
Judy: Right now?
Howard: YES!
[Judy starts to get out the bath]
Howard: No! Wait a minute! "

The drugstore scene is great and has the funniest quote I've always thought:

Bannister: Is this the kind with Bufferin?
Clerk: Thats right
Bannister: How much do I owe you?
Clerk: $68.29
Bannister: I beg your pardon?
Clerk: Sixty-eight dollars and twenty-nine cents.
Bannister: Well how much is it without Bufferin?

That always makes me laugh. Also the way Hugh Simon keeps mispronouncing Bannister's name through the whole movie. He only gets it right at the end when he asks Bannister if he wants to take a look at the grant check. lol

I want my bike back!

I'll give you your bike back - I'll give you a broken back if you don't be quiet.

I remember seeing that as a kid and thinking it was the funniest thing I'd ever heard.

reply

The guys with the plate glass during the chase scene.

A wonderful ballet........

reply

Yes, that one and this:

Eunice (on entering "the Larrabee offices"): "Hello, hel-lo... Is there... This can't be the Larrabee... (sees the suitcase) Why, those are Howard's! What on earth are you doing with Howard Bannister's rocks?". And then the three guys make for her and she goes "Ai...ai...ai...." Kahn is absolutely priceless here!

reply

Her "lines" there or shall we say grunts were priceless.
Why anyone would have thought that Mr Larrabee would have had his party in that building is beyond me completely.

reply

Too, too many funn ylines to list... but:

"Who do you think they'll arrest? The girl in the tub or the guy with his pants down?"

"We can make it?
"Oh God"
"We can make it"
"Judy"
"I don't think we can make it"

reply

I always crack up at this bit... I'm not sure of the exact words but it goes something like this...

Eunice - "These men tried to molest me."
Judge - "That's... unbelievable."

Makes me laugh every time... poor Eunice!

reply

Oo, too many to name, but I'll try.

The entire convention scene is hilarious, especially with the "You-you-" "...Eunice" bit, and the part where they're chatting under the table. Also..

"And I adore anyone who adores anyone who adores Emerson. Your turn."

The courtroom is funny as well, especially when Howard is explaining the situation to the judge. The judge's lines were great..."IAnd I think the Supreme Court would agree..."

The part where the thief is tripping the woman down the hallway is terrific...such charm.

I adore the conversation between the cab driver and Eunice when he's just dropped her off..."I don't think so."

"Well, there's not much to see actually, we're inside a Chinese dragon."

"I love those old Ventegums."

"Snakes, as you know, live in mortal fear of tile."

Buck Henry was a genius.

He said it's all in your head, and I said, so's everything--
But he didnt get it.

reply

My favorite scenes are the one where they're under the table in the restaurant & the courtroom scene. The whole movie was hilarious.

reply

Too many great lines in the film to mention. Buck Henry truly wrote a script that will still be funny 100 years after it was made. While the cars, hair, and clothing will go out of fashion, this movie will still be funny long after all those involved with it are dead.

But one of my favorites is when someone (can't remember who at present) garbs the small, original-sized bottle of Coke and tries to put out the fire in the hotel room!

And the way the room service waiter just stands there trying to get someone to sign for the food while panic ensues around him...

The one scene I didn't like was when Streisand and O'Neal did the duet on the piano. It felt forced-like it was added by contract-I can see her attorney/agent saying "Barbara won't do the movie unless she gets to sing in it."

reply

Its more like they begged her to sing something.

By this time Barbra was tired of doing musicals and wanted to branch out with some comedy and drama projects. I don't care what you say about Barbra she more than holds her own in this brilliant film. She looks beautiful and delivers every line perfectly. Her comic timing is flawless and up there with the greatest comedians of all time. She did it again in "Meet the Fockers".

reply

What is your favorite scene or bit?

All scenes with Kenny Mars. What a great actor. Also excellent in Young Frankenstien and The Producers. If your reading this Ken, your my Hero!

reply

"The one scene I didn't like was when Streisand and O'Neal did the duet on the piano. It felt forced-like it was added by contract-I can see her attorney/agent saying "Barbara won't do the movie unless she gets to sing in it."

Actually I think she was contractually obligated to do this movie and really didn't want to do it. She said something to RO about it not being funny. I wonder what she thinks of it now. It's a classic.

This whole thread cracks me up. I haven't seen it in years. Now I gotta go rent the movie. . .like, NOW.

reply

I love the way the courtroom clerk shouts in that stupid high voice.

Then the shot of the trash cans chasing that guy around a corner, where he jumps over the fence and onto someone's dining table.

Then the Howard/Eunice scene:

I'll probably say, "Hello there, I'm Howard."
"You are not!"
"I'm not Howard."
"You are not going to say, 'Hi, I'm Howard. Anyone can say that!'"
"Anyone named Howard."

And I always burst out laughing when Judy grabs the government worker's ankle when he's on the ledge. Just imagining how unexpected that would be if you were in his place.

reply

C'mon Steve, buy her the radio, its on sale
(howard storms out of the pharmacy)
You call this a honeymoon??!!

One thing I noticed this time around was one of the musicologist at the head table. You only get 2 brief glimpses of him, but he has long stringy hair and looks like a cadaver.

Yes, I had some friends visiting from.. the New Hebrides and they said they would be at Room 1717 at the hotel crystal.
Madam, this is the hotel bristol.
Well, then one of us must be at the wrong hotel
