Two modern films, that perhaps don't warrant auteur-status for their directors yet (remains to be seen as both were debuts), that I find irresistibly gorgeous are:
Moon (Duncan Jones, 2009) In Bruges (Martin McDonagh, 2008)
Well it certainly draws inspiration from several sci-fi classics of the 60's through the 80's but the overall impact of the film I found to be very original and the fact that it's an homage and throwback to classical filmmaking with models instead of overused CGI makes it all the more interesting.
Regardless, it is a beautifully shot and designed film and the mise-en-scene compliments the tone wonderfully.

Dear Warden, You were right. Salvation lies within.
Id say there are a lot of scenes that contain quite a bit of beauty if you ask me....just cuz alot of the movies a bloodbath doesnt mean it isnt visually beautiful
Dear Warden, You were right. Salvation lies within.
Nah, I still don't get it. I always find Tarantino highly derivative. It's not the blood I'm objecting to here. I just don't think it's really visually beautiful otherwise.
Good lists...Take a look at Scott's 'Legend' and I second his 'Duellists' which was noted already. And in the b&w vein take a look at "The Third Man". The visuals in the film are simply beautiful even among the destruction.
