I think you can say he's perfect for the role. He's mad! In the early scenes he's hitting and yelling at the Indian slaves for example. Wtf!
filming, he shot an extras finger off, and Herzog threatened to kill him if he walked off set. On the set of Fitzcarraldo, he was so abusive to the natives that one of them offered to kill him. Herzog politely declined, saying he needed him for the rest of the shoot. Herzog would also sometimes provoke him into fits of rage so that when he burned himself out he could get shots of him being calm. Genius often comes at a price I suppose. Tragic really.

shareMe too, but my point is that he doesn't like the ground truth and it is known to stage some scenes in his documentaries. He calls it "ecstatic truth". I think he does the same in interviews.
shareActually I found a confirmation by Kinski that Herzog loves tall tales. This particular story is about how Herzog pulled a gun at Kinski during the filming of Fitzcarraldo. It never happened.
