Worst Movie Musical ever?

I can't think of a worse one.

Can anyone name one?

Far from great, but certainly not the worst. I doubt you've actually seen that many musicals. There are far worse, like Mamma Mia, Lost Horizon, The Pirate Movie, Grease 2, Xanadu, etc., ad nauseum. In fact, if you were to purchase the El Cheapo 50 disc set of musicals, you'd see a lot more that I haven't mention.

I love the score! And Lee Marvin was positively brilliant. "Wandrin' Star" is a great song.

I didn't think much of this movie, but in all honesty I think Mame, The Wiz and A Chorus Line are worse than this one.

No contest --- Lost Horizon. No doubt the author and all of the original cast of the REaL movie are spinning in their graves, shrieking in horror.

Paint Your Wagon was a masterpiece of comedy, and I don't give a **** that Clint doesn't have the booming baritone voice that most of the usual Broadway stars have. "I Talk to the Trees" isn't much of a song anyhow, for my money.

Lee Marvin was a master of comedy and this is one of our very few opportunities to enjoy that side of his talent. As a "classic" musical ... no, this isn't Carousel, but I laughed my a** off and really enjoyed it. Who can ask for more?

If you think Paint Your Wagon is the worst movie musical then you haven't seen Newsies, Pirate Movie, Grease 2, and Phantom of the Opera(try telling me Clint is the worst singer after hearing Gerard Butler and Christian Bale sing)

I was going to select Let's Go Native, a cheap early-1930's thing that horribly misuses the great Jeanette MacDonald; but it's unlikely anyone on this thread will know that era.

Then I thought of that popular bad-musical winner, Can't Stop the Music, which could and in fact did stop it. But no flick as screamingly funny and entertaining (for all the wrong reasons) is truly a Bad movie in my book.

So, looking at the suggestions here, I'm going to have to go with The Pirate Movie. It's like a cheap Blue Lagoon travesty of The Pirates of Penzance (do not confuse the two). This is the movie that destroyed the promising career of talented Kristy MacNichol. Ssssssssooooooo bad!

I don't understand the bashing of this movie.

The idea in the movie of a woman having two husbands is rather "outre'", but LM, CE, and JS played along with it well.

Lee Marvin was very good in this. I've never been a fan of his, but he handles comedy very well. His scruffy, gruff persona was an excellent contrast to CE's soft-spoken, more "civilized" character.

To those who say Clint Eastwood couldn't do musical comedy, I think he did extremely well. His performance was subtle, understated, and a far cry from what we are used to seeing him in. But he managed to carry it off extremely well. He's very believable in the part. As for his singing, for someone who's not known as a singer, he carries a tune very well and has a rather good voice, in fact, he sounds better than some people who are known for their singing.

Jean Seberg is beautiful, and particularly gorgeous in this movie.

The scenery is just breath-taking, especially the shots of the deep-blue sky seen in much of the movie. We very rarely see such skies here in the East, usually in early fall.

The music is pretty good, for the most part. Very varied styles. "Wanderin' star" is done in a sort of cowboy "clip-cloppy" (my word lol) horse-trotting style. "Trees" has a subtle calypso beat. Of course, there are a number of the "big-production"-style songs which "belong" in big Hollywood musicals, too.

Last but not least, if anybody knows of a movie where CE looks BETTER than he does in this one, PLEASE let me know. He is so HOT in this movie that it's actually PAINFUL to see what he looks like today...sigh...had to be on the best-looking men on screen anytime, anywhere...

lunarose,
I just wanted to say that I enjoyed your response.
While I would agree that _Paint_Your_Wagon_ is far from the best movie musical ever,
There is much to be appreciated while watching it, and you describe it well.
