Hey, guys, anyone else like the movie?
I really did. It made me a little uncomfortable because of the gay overtones, but then I realized that it's just another part of life. Men will be men, right?! Haha!

shareIf there were gay overtones, the men wouldn't have been so freaking obsessed with getting women in their town.
share Who's gives a rat's ass if neither Eastwood or Marvin can sing; this film is *beep* fantastic! Lee Marvin gives one of the most memorable performences in cinema history and the entire supporting cast is brilliant.

WHat is is about the prudish crap? It's a bawdy musical about a bunch of sex-starved HETEROSEXUAL men in a mining camp. Gay overtones?? Where? Oh, you mean the part about Ben Rumson and Pardner taking care of each other through thick and thin? You DO realize that men can be very good friends without being sexually attracted to one another. And Eastwood wasn't very good for the part (imagining him singing Alissa with the river rushing by his profile is quite disturbing), but otherwise it's a regular romp. Come off it, people, and have some fun for a change...

Dear Soniameade,
I couldn't agree with you more. I hated it so much, I stayed up all night crying. And yes, it was completely immoral. I think it even showed dogs and cats living together! Speaking of which, my dog hated it so much, she buried the DVD in the back yard.

Personally I think the Op's "gay overtones" were because no matter where you look there are tents.
So camp!

I liked Lee Marvin and I loved Harve Presnell's rendition of "They Call the Wind Maria" but other than that, I found this movie to be a crashing bore.
sharei have to be honestg: while watching i didn't like,i'm not really into musical.
but once i've finished some scenes(and some songs for sure) really impressed me and continued to play in my mind.
loved the dance scene in the mud and the beginning and the end are wonderfule.

Ever see Eastwood in The Beguiled? I think he sang in that movie too. I'm pretty sure that was the reason his character was killed. Actually, Eastwood was lucky to have PERSONALLY survived that movie:)

I love "Paint Your Wagon," it's been one of my favorite musicals since I was a little girl; I've listened to it so often that I know the songs in it from memory. It's absolutely hilarious in parts. I think this was the first Clint Eastwood movie I ever saw.
My favorite character's Ben Rumson.

I love this movie...it's a real man's musical. (Along with 1776).
I love right at the beginning, when they're burying Pardner's brother, and they spot a glint of gold in the grave, and they jettison the body, and it disappears...straight up in the air.
I love that scene too!
There weren't any gay overtones. It was a "buddy" film.
Not that I would object if there were...this is an excellent musical comedy--one of Hollywood's best. The best film Lee Marvin made, in my opinion.
Totally agree with you, Kevintuma. I loved that movie. One of the most brilliant musical comedies of all time. There was no gay overtones and even if there was, so what ! Yes, it was a buddy film. I can not understand the bigotry which Hollywood seems to have with two guy showing a bit of kindness to each other.
P.S. I am a woman.
The best films are made in an intellengent format
It's one of the best.

I never noticed any gay issue and I really love the movie.
I loved it. They should have given Ben his own TV series.
