I read the book before I saw it and it's the only way it makes the movie excellent instead of just "ok".
My suggestion to anyone interested in watching 2001:
1. Read the 2001 novel by Arthur C. Clarke.
2. Watch the movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey.
3. Read the sequel, 2010 Odyssey Two, by Arthur C. Clarke
4. Watch the movie 2010: The Year We Make Contact
5. Skip the rest of the sequels.

It's actually the biggest piece of shit ever to come out of Hollywood, except for the original Bladerunner.
